Has latency improved with MIDI IDAM on newer iPads?

Sorry for the boring inquiry, I use an old iPad Air 2 from 2013, it's fine as I mostly use MIDI tools. But I find the latency a bit much when connected to Ableton via IDAM, even when DAW's buffer is set very low (64 or 128). So I'm hoping that maybe that has improved in newer models? I tried a friend's new iPad and found that Bluetooth MIDI was much better than mine for instance.

Also hope one they I won't need to open Audio Midi Setup every time I connect my iPad to my Macbook.
Cheers.

That's odd. I measured raw midi latency at under 1ms (closer to 0.5ms) with my Air 2 a number of years ago. It makes me think your added latency could be coming from something else. I have no idea what though.

If you haven't already, try connecting through a powered hub (host port attached to the Mac). iDAM is flaky when connected directly on older devices. I eventually needed a hub just to keep the connection alive with my 2015 MacBook Pro.

I don't think I could reliably measure any difference below 1ms if I were to repeat the experiment with my newer 9th generation iPad.

And yes, it would be great if we didn't have to go to Audio Midi setup each time we connected.

thanks a lot Wim, and sorry for reposting. I remember your great answer then. I'll try a powered hub and see if it makes a difference.

No need to apologize. I only posted the link for further detail, not to say that you should have looked it up. 😉

It would be good to dig into those latency issues. It seems like they may not be caused by iDAM itself. But maybe I just got lucky with my setup.

  • AUM has an adjustable Ableton Link offset that you could (maybe) fudge it with.

  • If you are using AUM and Ableton Link , use the Ableton link offset by like -22 ms and it will make it perfect sync.
