Sliding Energy - too much low end?
If anyone has time (and a subwoofer) - could you please tell me if the balance is off on this? This is a track I'm prepping to play live with a percussionist, vocalist, and guitarist. It's made on Loopy Pro and I've got a lot of filler synth sounds on here (for fun). My percussionist has played it in his car with a massive subwoofer and he says the low end is a bit too much.
What do you think?

There is a good bit of energy in the low end when the kick hits with the sub bass. Let me know if you want any help cleaning it up, sounds like some eq would do a lot of the work
I don't know, I liked the low end in this version a bit more.

Would that be the version your percussionist claims has too much bass?
Then again, and I could be crazy, but maybe run the unmastered version through Logic Pro's AI Mastering Assistant. When in doubt, Logic.
(If you don't like subscriptions, that's cool. Send me the unmastered track and I can run it through Logic's AI Mastering Assistant for you once I'm by my desk tomorrow.)
Thank you for your feedback. I went and baked in FAC Punchlab into the drum loop on this. I might have gone overboard. These are all separate loops. I will apply an EQ filter on it a bit more.
Yes. I put a bit of EQ on the Sub808 and drum loops to reduce a bit of the low end. But I'm glad you like it. Maybe we can work with it. It will be going through powered speakers FOH.
Wow. Thank you for your offer. Logic's AI mastering assistant is that good, eh? Sounds tempting. I might subscribe when it comes time to master this. I want to record the other members of the live collab team before I put this out as a finished track.
Ah now I see.
AH, the track isn't finished yet. Ah now I see. Well, normally I'd wait for all the parts to be recorded and stems all put together in a DAW before worrying if the bass is too much or what not. Not sure what your percussionist is worried about, unless too much bass throws them off or something?
Good point. I guess the worry is it will overpower the live mix. I think we can just have some EQ on the mixing board at the venue. I appreciate your time and feedback.
Ah, for the live performance. Okay, that makes sense. Yeah, the mixing boards at a venue usually have a nice three-knob EQ to shape the sound. I was thinking more from a studio producer standpoint, not realising this was for live performance. 😂 My bad. I misunderstood, but all good now. We figured it out somehow.
Seems like you figured it out but I still think @jwmmakerofmusic suggestion on using Logic’s mastering assistant is valid and will reduce relying on eq at the venue, which might be out of your control. We’ve all had experiences with good, not so good, and plain lazy sound techs.
I bet the mastering assistant will make a good judge. I trust it more than my own ears for these overall adjustments, given that there’s always some speaker, headphone or tired brain between the music and my ears. It’s surprising how good it is. It doesn’t screw up or change the character of the songs, unlike many presets in mastering chains that are too obvious and flashy.
Good point. I will consider getting a Logic subscription. I wish I could get that AI mastering in a separate one-time-purchase app.
I really appreciate your experienced input on this.
Also - I just realized the previous track you mentioned you like more - that version had the Bleass Sidekick on it: gave a nice extra kick. The percussionist felt it was too much. I like complicated drum patterns, but maybe I need to leave him some more space for his expressions. It's so easy to fill up a song - much harder to leave space.
Exactly. I don't know how the Mastering Assistant does it, but it does a better job mastering my tracks than I ever did with my own system.
This is absolutely true even for me. When working with other musicians, one should leave them their own space to express themselves within a song. I'm sure @Fear2Stop may have some tips on working with bandmates since he does this all the time online.
When me and the rest of F2S work together we send in the stems for each of our parts completely dry ; as I’m the one who does all the mixing and mastering I add all FX and production fuckamaroo * myself based on feedback from the others .
*yes that’s a word I made up lol
That makes sense. But when you say 'completely dry' do you mean, 'without EQ'; or do you mean 'no reverb, delay, or any other effects'?
Both… I handle all of that myself. Dino (our guitarist, although he does play a variety of other instruments depending on the song ) does a little bit of EQ on his end but I’d say I handle about 95% of that aspect
Cool. I enjoy the wet stuff, myself.
