Dubstep STYLE

Hello all.

What's the best IOS synth for obtaining dubstep style basses, interesting noises and vocal type sounds? There are so many, not sure where to begin!

Comments

  • Not sure which synth would be best. There is Cyclop for iPad, which is very suited for Dubstep basses. But it is iPad-only and the UI is a b-tch on the eyes, even on larger iPads. (Or maybe it is my eyesight 😂.)

There is Buttersynth which is a wavetable synth that, if memory serves proper, you can import your own wavetables. It could be closest to Serum, although I am happy to be corrected.

There is Synthmaster 2, but this is iPad only. Synthmaster One is available on iPhone, but I think its IAP store no longer functions correctly afaik. @Fear2Stop could fill you in.

Of course I think Tera Pro and its IAPs would be the number one choice, but it takes a while to grok its UI. Once you grok it, the sky's the limit.

Of course there's always Drambo, aka the swiss army knife of iOS music apps.

It takes longer to grok its workflow compared to Tera Pro, but again once you grok it, the sky's the limit.

  • Also if you use Nanostudio 2, Obsidian is capable of some really sick sounds. And if you use FL Studio Mobile, the GM synth is also capable of some really sick sounds.

  • The app Agonizer seem specifically designed to facilitate the dubstep bass wobble.

I'll be doggone. It appears I previously bought that synth but never downloaded it to my phone. Gonna change that now.

I will once the day comes I return to EDM. 😂 I'm in full Prog Rock "listening and learning" mode. Just finished "Dark Side of the Moon". Utterly brilliant!

Some nice sounds but I'm getting a crash every time I try to load on the latest iOS version. Phone and iPad

When I did use it....the UI wouldn't scale when resizing the window.....and I found the grafix slightly outdated.

    But the sounds were decent

What made me decide not to get it was the fact that the workaround for people to get it to work was to change the buffer size…and that’s not possible in GarageBand

@jwmmakerofmusic just Nailed it i think. There's a lot of sounds in Dubstep and if you're looking for one synth to rule them all then Drambo, SM2, Tera Pro, and buttersynth are your go to's. Personally I think Drambo is the real winner (it can truly sound like anything) and SM2 if you prefer presets. All of them have a learning curve with Buttersynth probably being the smallest but also the most unstable by all reports. Tera looks and sounds incredible but it's interface is just not for me.

If you're new to iOS music making and you want to save yourself a lot of time and money then focus your learning efforts on Drambo. Even if you branch out from there you'll be WAY farther along.

If you want some more targeted responses and synth options drop a song link in the chat.

Also, i have agonizer and I keep wanting to love it but i find Numerical's interfaces to be so wonky. Nothing resizes nicely and then i get lost and uninspired. Their stuff sounds great but it's not really universal despite being supported on iphone. I do a lot of synth programming on phone and sequencing on iPad. YMMV.
