Update-Mididreams (bug?): Step advance on note advancing without playing step periodically?
Edit: Art Kerns emailed me and said he's submitting a fix. He cautions that you want to send monophonic sequences into Mididreams to avoid problems. But the fix should address the skipped notes. As an aside, in my experience Mozaic Hypnosequence and Infinity Looper can take polyphonic sequences driving note advancr if you want that in your workflow.
Has anyone tried using Mididreams with the step advance on note I put mode? This is a powerful modular way to use Mididreams to play a melody by inputting midi from another sequencer's sequence to dictate the rhythm. This is one of my favorite ways to use a sequencer if the ability is there. I usually use Mozaic Hypnosequence or Infinity Looper to do this, but love the Mididreams UI and was hoping to do the same.
When using Steppolyarp, Aphelian, Piano Motifs, Fuge Machine, or Rozeta Arp (really any app... Tried a bunch) as a midi input, Mididreams will show the step advance based on the input BUT will mute notes periodically while still advancing the step. The Mozaic scripts I mentioned above work flawlessly with the same setup. Has anyone else run into this? I've hard reset the iPad but no love. Thanks!

I've since tested the note advance on Mididreams with several other apps. I've used Mozaic Metroplex, Arpbud 2, Musebud, Auto Bass Generator, 4Pockets Euclidean, and Bouncebud.
The issue persists across all tested apps... The sequence will visually advance upon each note received via midi but ever 4th or 5th note won't play, and sometimes a series of notes will not play in a row.
I've also noticed that if the midi sequence routed into Mididreams has some complex, fast patterns, the I strument connected to Mididreams will develop a low distorted hum. I noticed this on Grand Piano and Primer, but didn't test more than that.
Yeah, the skipped notes happens to me as well...
Art emailed me and said hell have a fix in the next build. He said that the app will only handle monophonic sequences though. Thanks for confirming the bug!
Couldn’t you work around this by just limiting the notes that get through to midi dreams to one particular trigger note?
I just got confirmation from the developer that if a step's gate off message is received too close to the next step it will mute that new step.
He just released a new build that fixes this, but if you play a polyphonic midi stream into the app it will bug out and start having problems. He warned me about that but I wanted to see what happened. It missed notes and started making the instrument produce some weird low distorted tones. Mididreams would then have muting problems again. Restarting the auv3 fixed everything.
Art Kerns is great... He responded to my bug request in hours and fixed the bug in less than a day!
This is great news!
Super tempted to pick up mididreams now.
It's the only auv3 analog style step sequencer with midi note input advance that I know of.
I like to drive it with Aphelian, a generated Pure Acid sequence, or Steppolyarp for some tasty rhythmic groove. Routing Musebud in and playing with the Bud's duration probabilities can give you some good rhythmic variation for melodies or harmonies that float in the mix since there isn't the same kind of repetitive groove the aforementioned apps will bring.
If you like tweaking an analog sequencer while it's playing (like for Berlin school jams), especially one with the oft-overlooked but super powerful midi note advance, it's a no-brainer.
There are some sequencers in miRack that are analog style. All miRack sequencers can be wired up to be advanced by note input. MidiDreams is more satisfying IMO than most of those, but they're fun to check out.
Ah, I haven't yet waded into those deep waters. For a complete neophyte, is it much work to wire up most of these sequencers? I remember trying one once, following a SFM tutorial to the T, and the clocked module didn't stop when I hit aum transport, but would stop once I hit play again, so the sequencer would run when aum was paused lol
That was probably failing to set Momentary RUN input in clocked. It could be something else too. I wrote a post with step by step that I know works somewhere around here. But you don't want clocked for this. Something like this is all you need for note triggered sequencer advance:
The optional quantizer module is to force notes to scale.
I will say that I sidetracked for a few weeks exploring miRack's sequencers. tbh I didn't find any of them that I would consider staples. But most of them are fun to mess with for a change of pace from time to time.
