A different take on the 404 update of what it can replace and maybe shed some light on the sheer power of this unit which is not that obvious….

  • They basically turned it into a controller for an iPad app that doesn’t need a controller.

    Nice to have physical buttons.

  • Does Controller mode work if Koala is a AUv3 or just in standalone?

Vids are standalone but I can’t see why it wouldn’t work in AUM etc…

  • Sold mine as I just didn’t have that much fun with it and I realized how little I want to sample. This looks amazing for a full workstation machine now tho.

  • Koala said I don’t need to make my own controller I will just make a deal with the competition and take over the world lol seems like a great companion app and controller.

  • Brilliant for Koala. That app goes from strength to strength. Very savvy developer.

  • I sold mine last week cause it didn’t have a looper… lol. No problem the iPad has a few. 🤪

every single app that isn't touch based (like borderlands, Samplr , TC-11 etc) , needs controller
not everyone likes hitting glass , or swiping virtual knobs/faders...

well ,still it can't replace a dedicated looper since you can't have separate takes on-the-fly per pad :)

Yeah… i feel roland are really missing a trick with this device as far as quickly getting loops in (and into a sequence) is concerned.
They’re kinda reinventing the wheel a little.
Back when i had an SP808 i could sync my gear to it and easily capture a loop straight to a pad. And then another to another pad. It seems like the 404 always has a few extra steps and some of them are like a secret short button combo from Streetfighter 2 🤣
As the 808 was Zip drive based and an older processor, it was far more limited but we are 25 years into the future here.

If the 404mkii had a more efficient mode for capturing loops, a bit like Abletons clip matrix, I would buy one again. Even the new fixed length recording mode is maxed at 4 bars.

I still have an SP-808EX 'rescue' (purchased used/broken, replaced zip drive), an MC-505 and a Fantom X6. The 404 would feel like family and is really beginning to seem like the perfect companion to the Ipad. It can serve as a controller, audio interface but also has the flexibility of standalone operation. It is also really portable and battery operated. Watching this video was indeed eye opening:

I had a SP404Mkii for a bit. The usb interface aspect of it is great. It wasn’t quite right for me but when I sold it, I did think that I am likely to buy again when the right updates come. It was better I sold it quick and let someone else get the benefit of its warranty rather than it sat in its box till I felt like using it.
