Can't let go of my curiosity for RingsFX

I have to be very discerning since I have purchased too hastily in the past and have amassed a huge library of great apps that I don't use and serve the purpose of distraction only now! (as I'm sure many of you have :) I have Tera Pro RingZ and aim to start using Mutable in miRack. I particularly love resonator apps (one of my favorite is Moodal on desktop. RingsFX sounds interesting cause of the randomization feature but outside that, does it offer other sound shaping tools that others don't? Would love to hear from you all who have used it for any length of time now.

Thanks so much!

Comments

  • If you have doubts, hold off until you don’t. ;)

  • The main advantage is that it can be used as an fx. Tera Pro can't. See for example the demo I did on YouTube Shorts turning a few manipulated clock samples into a melodic piece by running it through rings fx.

Things like AAS Obkeq can also be used as an effect, but can't take midi in to determine what frequency the resonator plays at. Rings FX can. So I'd say grab it if you like physical modeling.

I’d say the possibility to sequence most settings (via the exciter menu) is what makes this one special to me. It’s a bit like Icegears Kroneker synth meets Rings.

  • Thanks all!! Great appreciated input!

This will be a great addition to your unused app collection.

If you're trying to save money then starting with the Audible Instruments modules in miRack will help. You can use miRack as an effect as well as an instrument, as you can with RingsFX.

I've set up a simple RIngs patch in MiRack, with audio input and Wet/Dry control. As I already have the Tera Pro Ringz module, te miRack FX rack gives me the live input capability that the Tera Pro module lacks, but the Tera Pro module has all sorts of additional sound design capability due to its modular architecture e.g. setting up feedback loops, with Ringz feeding back into itself, with all kinds of fascinating results.

  • Definitely! And tons of really interesting things you can use as exciters> @craftycurate said:

I agree with you - I'd rather use the Tera Pro Ringz module. I get better sounds more easily out of it.
But most of the things you mentioned you can do with Rings you can also patch up in miRack.

Yeah I love to use the Tera Pro Mixer to combine one of the RingZ outputs, with White/Pink Noise, and maybe an OSC or the Shaper, then feed Mixer1-3 input back into the RingZ input node, and then play around with parameters to find the chaotic point where I'm riding the edge of the feedback loop and see what kind of sound emerges from that. It's really hard to predict which is why it's such rich territory to explore.

Also fun to use BrainZ as an input to RingZ!

Thanks @wim I hadn't really explored similar setups in MiRack, as I'm not really fluent in that environment, but I will definitely look into it more.

RingsFX is not just a Rings, if you're going to use miRack, and don’t care about:

    • Polyphony, velocity sensitivity, or MPE.
    • Mod-Matrix with LFOs and FEGs.
    • Exciter with two custom filters.
    • All tweaks saved in one patch in one self-sustaining AUv3 FX.
    • Works perfectly in LP4i.

Then use miRack resonator, you have nothing to bother about. ;)

Thank you! I do care most about polyphony and MPE! And exciter and AUv3 for sure too. I think I'm convinced to give it a try!

yep so what do you think about it now ;)? Personally it is the complete and polyphonic implementation of MI algo with the modulation parameters on the velocity, aft, the wheel, on (random !) fast, makes the keyboard playing very expressive and the fun creation alive like a tuning of little timbre of strings and let's go!. I always loved mutable algos, sometimes hours on the modal algo with a midi pad on vcv then Mirack etc. trying to make a sort of percussion, tabla etc. lively, organic, it wasn't bad, but the setting implementing patch, midi map etc was tricky and often monophonic... here we easily create playable and lively instruments and I found it great. If it's more like a sequenced instrument the difference is not obvious with others and the app becomes standard, but I find the app fantastic as soon as it is thought of with keyboard playing and 🍒 on the cake (French image), the MPE works ! ;) and very logical for this type of synthesis, the independent poly pitch brings a "Osmose Hardaware synth ;)" side with easy complete editing (here even if it's not the same sound engine) .For my part, skeptical at the beginning because I'm not always a fan of the 4pocket presentation, I find here that it's really very well laid out, I'm won over. Essential app (from my point of view) for MPE equipment, a percussionist (pad). noon), a keyboardist. I have the other ios alternatives and, like you, some sleeping apps ;) but this one, perhaps because of my profile, is one of my references so what about you? I may be too complimentary, I don’t know but I would be delighted to have your point of view ! (I like a lot of strings from the same developer but less immediate due to the many parameters, but still also alive in expressive play).

I ended up not getting it but your comments have sparked the interest again! If I get it soon, I’ll post back for sure. Thanks for the reply!

  • I hope my message is understandable because I use gtranslate to be more precise, but not sure upon rereading that it is ultimately very clear... ;) in any case yes, in the approach that I mentioned perhaps , I recommend this app!
