Cubasis not sending sequencer Start to external midi synth sequencer

I have Cubasis 3 sending clock to my synth thru midi cable plugged in my Scarlett 4i4. When I press play my synth get the clock but it does not start the sequencer.

If I start the sequencer manually when I press stop in cubasis my synth sequencer stops.

I tried to do the same in Audiobus and it synch and start/stop like expected. That tell me most likely I plugged my cable right and set my synth right.

I do have Send midi clock activated in the setup. I tried with Ableton link on and off. No difference.

Also tried Synch Start/stop in Ableton Link with no luck.

Do I have to have a track routing midi out for the start/stop to work?

Comments

  • Can anybody confirm if I need Abelton Link to sync thru midi cable with start/stop ?

  • No, MIDI clock sync needs a "MIDI Status Start" or "Continue" message for the receiver to start.
Please use a MIDI monitor to verify if that message is sent by Cubasis.
You never know, Cubasis had a number of issues with MIDI clock sync in the past.

  • According to midi spy it seems to stand start and stop

  • Hmmm.
Looks weird, it's sending both a START and a CONTINUE message which doesn't make sense - it's either START to tell the receiver to play from the beginning or CONTINUE to tell it to resume playback from the last position where it stopped at.
Maybe your clock receiver has trouble interpreting this?
That's my guess because you wrote that sync from Audiobus works.
I bet that AB only sends one of these messages at a time, right?

  • I will try when I get back home

  • This is Audiobus result. You were right. No continue.

  • At least now you know how to leave your hardware synth wondering about Cubasis' real intents 😜

Yeah! Getting the poor thing all confused.

I guess the next question is , can I block that continue command with Streambyter or something similar?

  • In StreamByter, all you need is

    FB = XX +B

and then Install Rules. (Start, Continue, and Stop are FA, FB, and FC.)

Are you able to route the MIDI from Cubasis through StreamByter?
