Tips for using Riffler and Flow for more than 8 bars? My current workarounds...
I would love any tips on how you guys use Riffler and Riffler flow when jamming on sequences that are longer than just the 8 bars the apps let you work with. Any tips, workflow ideas, etc. are appreciated! I know I can't be the only one who wants to jam out on more than 8 bars using these fantastic apps ☺
I love what these apps come up with but the 8 bar limitation is a real bummer. It means that if I want a 16 bar sequence with 4 chords, I have to do one of the following.
1. Record midi to Atom.
The problems are that 1. It means not being able to use the fantastic Riffler sounds, 2. Not being able to take advantage of Riffler's riff randomization when jamming, and 3. I just don't like to work that way. It's more fun to fire up different sequencers and generators and work directly rather than record midi.
2. Sequence AUM presets
This means for a 16 bar sequence with 4 chord changes (once every 4 bars), I have to create an 8 bar preset with two chord changes, then another with the remaining two, then sequence the AUM presets as I'm jamming my track.
This works surprisingly well with Riffler, as with either a midi or audio generator the preset change happens quickly enough for it to sound seamless. Riffler Flow has a slight hiccup at the beginning when used as audio, but I think that Flow just generally has this problem as an audio generator as I can hear a slight glitch when Flow repeats it's audio.
However, this workaround means that I have to use LK/Patternbud or something to send PC to AUM... another element that needs to be set up instead of just ideally programming 4 chords across 16 bars in Riffler. It also means quickly getting swamped with many AUM presets which then need thought going into naming conventions (e.g., Date, Chord, Tone setting). It gets to be a lot and a my British friends say, a bit of a faff.
It's all too bad. .. I wish there were no bar limitations to Riffler or Riffler Flow. They're both so musical.

You do have endless mode (with or without randomise) but maybe that is not what you're after as it does change a little bit too much instead but you could record and see what you get. Sorry if it's a dumb suggestion.
Could you set it to 16th notes and run it at half tempo?
I understand the frustration, but I suppose it was designed for riffs - short repeated phrases, not to provide the structure for a whole track.
Very true... I think the thing is that I'd like Riffler to play with the chord changes, and unfortunately, while riffs set across 8 barsoften still work against something written across 16,for example, sometimes they don't.
Totally, and I get that riffs are short phrases, I guess I just want to have those be usable across something with multiple chord changes across a longer period of time. Though, I do think these apps are works of art and understand that they're more for designing A RIFF, not necessarily stringing riffs across different chord changes together.
I actually didn't realize you could choose the tempo for Riffler and still have it start with the host... Tried it and it works great. It does mean I can have the app play across 16 bars at 8th notes, which is great! Stinks to lose the 16th notes by doing it this way, but I'll take it. Thanks!
This glitch with Riffler Flow audio when it returns to the start of a loop really bothers me. It's not noticeable generally with a delay on, but is noticeable when using dry. I did message the developer about it back shortly after the app was released. Maybe it's not fixable. But it's a very serious flaw, in my view.
Agreed. Luckily I hardly use the sound without adding an fx chain which hides the flaw, but I'm shocked the app made it out with the problem, and am surprised it hasn't been fixed yet.
I don't use mentioned apps but if Riffler allows you to halve the bpm or set the bpm manually you could do that and have 2 bar chord changes that sound like 4 bar chord changes. If it doesn't allow that but your other apps you could work at a lower overall project tempo and adjust the tempo in other apps.
