MidiWrist Unleashed available for beta testing

Hi everyone,

MidiWrist Unleashed is a standalone Apple Watch MIDI controller that directly communicates with Bluetooth LE MIDI devices, without the need for an iPhone. It's the successor to my original MidiWrist app (https://uwyn.com/midiwrist/) and finally delivers the features I tried to achieve many years ago.

I've started beta testing MidiWrist Unleashed, if you're interested and have an Apple Watch with watchOS 10 or later, and an iPhone to get the TestFlight invite, please send me your Apple ID in a direct message. I'll get you added.

Thanks for your help in testing!

App description:

MidiWrist Unleashed turns your Apple Watch into a standalone MIDI controller that can directly connect to any advertised Bluetooth LE MIDI device, without the need of your iPhone or any other proxy.

The tactile feel of the digital crown combined with haptic feedback, gives you control over any MIDI device by touching your wrist, even when you're not looking.

Features:

• Standalone MIDI controller for your Apple Watch
• Fully configurable on your Watch, no external app is required
• Any number of knobs can be controlled with the Digital Crown
• Macro control over multiple MIDI parameters from the Digital Crown
• Remotely Play / Stop / Pause / Record / Rewind / Fast Forward your DAW from your Watch
• Knobs can be controlled individually or simultaneously
• Knobs can be linked to preserve their offsets
• Any number buttons can be toggled by tapping the Watch
• Buttons can either be stateful or momentary
• Pages can be created with any combination of controls choosing from buttons and knobs
• Program changes through the Digital Crown or by tapping the Watch
• Transport control over MIDI Machine Control (MMC) or Mackie Control Universal (MCU)
• Scrub transport with the Digital Crown
• Save / Undo / Redo / Toggle Cycle / Toggle Click / Enter through MCU
• XY pad with individual messages for each axis
• Motion data (pitch, roll, yaw, acceleration) can be sent in real time
• Trigger thresholds for motion data to send discrete messages instead of a continuous stream
• Optional haptic feedback
• Configurable colors for all knobs, buttons and panels
• Configurable labels for knobs, buttons and panel
• Configurable MIDI channels and MIDI messages (continuous control, program change, channel pressure, note)
• Create any number of the controller pages you need
• Delete and rearrange controller pages
• Save your configurations to presets for easy retrieval
• Delete and rearrange presets
• Connect to other Bluetooth MIDI devices
• Low latency and fast response

  • That is incredible. Love it.

  • Made an account just to applaud and test this out, my watch has been gathering dust and this will breathe a lot of life into it!

  • Umm, I've actually not seen a reason to own an apple watch until now...

  • And I just ordered an S9. Damn it Geert, look what you gone and made me buy. 😂

  • @GeertBevin just DM’d - MidiWrist Unleashed is looking pretty sweet! 😻🎛🚀

  • Questions on Bluetooth LE devices and Apple. Would love to use this new app between devices but I found currently connecting 2 Apple devices by Bluetooth impossible.

Watch to ipad or Mac mini doesn’t seem to advertise one or the other for connecting? This problem been around for a while.

Anyone else have issues connecting between devices ?

I use CME WIDI devices UHost, Widibud, Widihost. Does having these sat in the Bluetooth cache affect connectivity even if they are not turned on ?

What device with Bluetooth LE are people testing with this new app?

On the Mac you need to launch Audio MIDI Setup, show the MIDI Studio and open Bluetooth configuration. There you can advertise your Mac and connect from the Watch. For the iPad, you need an app that is able to advertise itself as a BLE MIDI peripheral, AUM does this, all Moog synths have this too in their MIDI settings.

    Hope that helps.

The S9 is really cool, I also got one a few months ago when I figure out how to make the direct BLE connection from the Watch work on my S4.

    Nice!

  • @GeertBevin this looks amazing, I’d love to try it, but would need to get a watch first. Do you know the oldest version of Apple Watch it will work on?

Thank you! It's working with my Series 4. MidiWrist Unleashed requires watchOS 10, so think the Series 4 is actually the oldest that would work.

Thanks for quick reply - I was researching concurrently, but good to have it confirmed by you. Off to eBay now. How long do you think the test flight beta will remain open for?

Just did some more research, if you're getting a watch for this, maybe a Series 5 is the oldest to go for, because it has an always on display. This will keep things running more smoothly, otherwise when your display goes to sleep as you move your hand around, you might get more Bluetooth disconnections.

  • Yup it’s like inspector gadget midi style, MWU ain’t nothing to F with!

Actually it is, and controlling the octotrack crossfader with the crown of my watch is melting my ever loving mind in a wonderful way.

    Received & thank you! 👌

Works well on initial test 😺. However, I can’t see a way to get program change to work like in the picture above, ie press a button to move up/down preset numbers, is this not possible on the beta?

It's the stepper panel, do you not see that in the list of panel, it should be towards the bottom when you scroll the list down.

All good! FYI, you can rename any panel, also rearrange and delete them. You can also create any number of panel types and then edit the label and MIDI message for each control ... all on your watch!

Experimented with a lot of different devices and my Series 4 Watch, and it looks like I've managed to make the connection really reliable. So we're back to any watch that can run watchOS 10
