Weeping Axons and FM waifus! It’s… Loab
William Gibson, godfather of Cyberpunk, first popularised the idea that, beyond the Blackwall, in the darkest depths of cyberspace, the line between autonomous rogue AIs and supernatural beings - for instance, the Loa of Haitian and Louisianan Voodoo - grows exceedingly thin.
The above image appeared as the final iteration of an exploration into the ‘negative space’ created by an AI art program prompted to produce ‘the opposite of Marlon Brando’. Wording in the scene apparently read ‘Loab.’ Repeated iterations took the image into ever darker scenes of gore and horror. And, disturbingly, any sufficiently determined exploration of ‘negative space’, from any other starting point, also seemed always to arrive ultimately at ‘Loab’, present at different scenes of horror. Researchers are at a loss to understand why the image recurs. Or why it always calls itself ‘Loab’.
Loab?
Loa?
Coincidence?…
…And thus, the first true demon of the AI age has revealed itself, conjured by the incantatory power of prompt engineering, a fittingly Enochian argot for our time of communing with unknowable machine intelligences, conducted beneath the cold inescapable gaze of Roko’s basilisk… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roko's_basilisk
Humanity is so small. And so very, very alone.
Sequencing by Neon. Drums courtesy Axon 3 and Sidekick, pads n bleeps from FMqt, main line vocal loops from Blocs Wave via several Weeping Walls; Outer Space; the usual reverbs. Live mixed from AUM into AudioShare.
Enjoy!

Lovely piece, and I’d forgotten all about Loeb, haunting the dark spaces in between 🙃
Ah, but she has not forgotten about you… Thanks for the listen, and the comment.
I’m guessing she lurks somewhere deep inside all of us, been hiding there growing for all of living history and only now revealed through the magic of machine learning. What other terrors await😅
Scary...
A well constructed and produced piece of music that, although not as scary as I was expecting, was still quite unnerving, though also quite enjoyable!
@lasselu @AlterEgo_UK : thanks, both, for the listens and the comments. @AlterEgo_UK, I take your point that the noise is not out and out scary, but my pole star in such matters has always been Clive Barker:
The dark glamour of the forbidden, the seductive appeal of the darkness. Beauty, glittering in endless night… I try to avoid the cliches and tropes, preferring instead old HPLs insistence on the weird over straight horror, something at a Dutch angle to the normal. Don’t always make it, obvs, but it gives me something to shoot for.
I’m with Colin on this one … ‘ still quite unnerving, though also quite enjoyable!’ 👍
That’s the pull quote for the marketing campaign: “ ‘quite enjoyable’ - @GeoTony ”
Ha, now I read it again it is a bit damning with faint praise…. certainly wasn’t meant as that… what about…
‘still quite unnerving 🫣, though extremely enjoyable 😊’ 🤔
Rokos basilisk is insanity!
Great brooding voids filled with strange creatures
Sorry for the self- bump, but I just watched this on the YouTubes. Posted 4 days ago. Pretty creepy, actually, and gives her some backstory (…and body horror.). Hitting my buttons on both the horror and the AI front. Called Mora here, but still... Imagine my surprise. That internet cryptid sure gets around!
The story is a miracle of compression too. I think this is a very talented director. Wouldn’t be surprised if we see more and greater from them in the future.
