Bass 4 : Spelsosa 2

In the 70s I had a record called For all it is by Barre Phillips that featured four double bassists and a drummer. This is my interpretation using Piano Motifs.

SWAM Double Bass, ROLI Noise Fluid Acoustic Bass, iBassist Slap, BeatHawk Fretless Vibrato and a couple of Speldosas for good measure.

  • Beautiful, mellow piece. I especially love fretless bass. Cool and unusual concept using 4 bass players. I have never heard of anything like that before. I had also never heard of Barre Phillips, so I did a bit of searching. I found the piece you referenced. I thought it was somewhat difficult to listen to, but liked the idea behind it. I like yours much better! I kept on searching and found some video of him performing solo bass compositions. Those were great! As a former bass player, I should have known of him. I found that he has worked with some of the best in the jazz industry. Apparently, he is still alive and pushing 90! Thanks for turning me on to Barre Phillips. Have a great day!

  • That’s good, Tony. I like the open space. Have to look up Barre. What’s a Speldosa?

  • I remember being challenged by the album in the 70s @Paulieworld but it opened up new music to investigate , especially John Surman who Phillips played with in a trio along with Stu Martin the drummer. If you haven’t listed to a John Surman he’s definitely worth checking out and is also still creating aged 79.
Thanks @LinearLineman . Speldosa is a ‘music box’ app. Just does one thing but does it very well.

  • My wife is working late tonight, so I spent some time looking up a few more Barre Phillips, and John Surman. I found Mountainscapes IV by Phillips. Very cool stuff! I also found John Surman with Jack DeJohnette (playing a Fender Rhodes). Most think of him as a drummer, but he was also a killer piano player. I found Fide et Amore and really enjoyed it. Being an English jazz sax player, I never heard much about him here in Chicago. Thanks for the tip!
