Is Retronyms dead?

Downloaded tabletop since it was free and thought I might run Iprophet through it. Crashes immediately when i try to open it.

  • Does the same for me and has for ages. Strangely long after I thought it was completely dead, they released an update and it became clear that other people were able to open that. Still doesn't open for me.

  • Thanks,
weird stuff. I'm using a 9th gen Ipad and thought the download would be the most recent version. Is there an update somewhere I missed?

  • Didn't they do a sale on AudioCopy a week or so ago?

    So, not totally dead.

As we can see they also make music apps for Android.

Also, as I remember from early era of mobile apps for music making, Retronyms did a lot of work for other brands, not only own products…

  • As far as developing IPad apps they’re dead….at least to me. Apparently they just sell sounds for Audiocopy/Impc pro now

    Yes, absolutely stone cold dead.

Yeah - it looks like they have pretty much left the iOS market.

But they are still in business 10+ years later so they must be doing something right. Many other developers have folded in that time. Maybe focusing on the iMPC thing and sound packs was a good business move...?

    A sale on audiocopy,really? 😂😂

  • Thanks for the responses, the Tabletop was free but I was hoping it would actually boot up and work after downloading. I get a splash screen for about 1-2 secs and then nothing. I sent em a support email. We'll see if they answer back.

  • Just checked. Tabletop works fine on this 2017 ipad running 16.6.

Well, a sale on the sound pack IAPs.

From memory, wasn't there a kind of "VHS vs. Beta" thing with TableTop and AudioBus?

TableTop had a dozen or so modules and AudioBus ended up having hundreds of apps that worked with it.

And then Korg Gadget entered the ring and it was game over.

Not sure if that scenario is 100% accurate but that's how I remember it.

  • Works here, but on and off. Shame, I always found it a peculiarly creative setup (which took me a dang long time to basically master)....

Tabletop is tremendous, really - a unique design. It’s a shame to hear that it doesn’t run well on new devices.

  • Tabletop was one of my first apps and I still have some love for it. It's just not installed because of space
What I end up doing sometimes is firing up Audiotool to get on that same vibe again

    https://www.audiotool.com

To me it's what Tabletop could be if retronyms gave it more love

  • I have just started the process to redownload it for a look. It tells me it will take 4 mins & 17 seconds - what’s that all about?

    It didn’t - it’s done already.

  • Yeah, Tabletop is very prone to crashes for me now (iPad Pro A12Z, iOS 17.4.1)

It's a shame, because they really had something there. I'm not even a big fan of skeuomorphic interfaces (making it look like real-world physical equipment), but I enjoyed Tabletop nonetheless because the environment felt very playful and fluid. Like I could just start with the tiniest kernel of an idea, and whoooosh I'd look up an hour later and realize my "tabletop" was full and I had 80% of a finished song.

That tabletop jam metaphor, and the speed and ease of zooming in and out of each device, is/was the killer feature. They really nailed the DAWless jam experience before DAWless even entered the vocabulary.

Anyway, sadly now it's not reliable enough for me to use it seriously.

It's emblematic of their shift in identity that their Retronyms Labs homepage still says "For The Music Makers" next to the logo in the footer, but the first app showcased in the carousel at the top is a cryptocurrency app.

Exactly. Still playing with it this morning though :)

Their iMPC 2 page has this cringe-worthy endorsement:

  • Got a support email from Retronyms and sent a video of the crash issue. Stay tuned for the next episode.

  • I love Phase84. But when I contacted them to ask how to remove a MIDI mapping, they said I had to uninstall and reinstall the app. When I asked if they agreed that that was not acceptable and should be fixed, their response left me with the impression that they might agree but that they weren’t going to do any further updates.

  • Awesome! If they can fix the crashing issue, I will be delighted to give Tabletop more of my time!

    Hey FruityLoop,

This is Robert with Retornyms. I'm sorry to hear that Tabletop hasn't been working for you. We released an update with a couple of new features in the fall of 2023 and optimized for iOS 17. It's worked well for a lot of people but some users have reported a crashing bug at times when trying to save their project. Our Dev team is currently working on a fix for this bug and delivering an update in the coming weeks. If anyone on this thread wants to report a specific issue with our apps or give us update suggestions, please reach out to us at [email protected].

I do have an additional question for the fans of Tabletop here. We often hear from the true fans of Tabletop that they loved the concepts and wished it evolved with new features and integrating new tech. As many of you know, the Tabletop ecosystem is extensive, complex and maintenance increases in difficulty as it grows.

Our team is taking a serious look at re-focusing efforts on Tabletop with the idea of making it a subscription service. If you look at the landscape of music making apps, the reality is that the apps with a subscription receive the best maintenance and new features. For our Tabletop fans, would you consider supporting continued improvements to Tabletop if it was a monthly subscription? What would it be worth to you for a fair subscription price? $7.99, $4.99, 2.99? We are hoping for any feedback from our community of Music Makers.

    Cheers
    -Robert

    Hi Robert,

Thank you for making contact. I have put a short video of what happens when I launch a fresh install of Tabletop on the link below.

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ithWGUCI9Jy1gO3C5O8sxhj6UXrgWq_H/view?usp=drivesdk

This happens on my old iPad (iPad Pro (9.7 inch) which is stuck on iOS 16.5.2). I honestly can't remember when it last launched - I think it has had that issue for me since about 2017/18 time. I moved away from iPad and solely use iPhone for music these days so it hasn't been on my radar to get fixed at all. I have loads of iPad only apps which are all legacy to me now, and I think that includes most of my retronym ones.

Tabletop was good fun at the time and prior to AU gave an inter-connect to apps that was missing or tricky to achieve smoothly otherwise. It had that visual overview that was great for people moving from hardware environments. It brought with it the iMPC which I own every version of but no longer use at all due to being iPad only (didn't move with me and became replaced). Would I use Tabletop now? Probably not in all honesty, although it has been so long since it launched successfully that I can't really remember the app completely and have probably missed functionality changes etc. It would need to incorporate 3rd party AU today and I can sort of imagine it as a visually expanded AU host environment using that original concept which could be good. But as iPad only, I wouldn't pull out the iPad just for it.

With that in mind, I doubt my opinion will be of much interest for future planning but I will state that I don't subscribe to ANY apps. I would prefer to pay for app updates and additional functionality as one-off payments. As soon as an app is subscription it doesn't exist to me. If Tabletop had originally been subscription, I wouldn't have ever tried it, or bought additional IAP or linked apps.

  • @robertng04 : Remember though , you’re competing with Logic Pro for iPad with the subscription there so it seems there would have to be some sort of impcPro3 or Tabletop 2 , or some some supercharged thing. Or I wish someone would come up with some “rent to buy “ plan so that after 2 or 3 years it was the customers to keep with perhaps a yearly upgrade cost . Thoughts?
