help on how to choose a chord not listed in the chord pad in Evolver by 4pockets
Hi All, I'm trying to add a chord in the chord chain (song mode) and this chord is not listed in the few chords of the chord pad. So I'm changing the root note so that new chords are generated and I have the chord I want to insert now in the chord chain... BUT I've noticed that also all the previously inserted chords in the chord chain change according to the new root note... what am I doing wrong? just for example, I want to insert a D major after an A minor. In the A minor chord pad there is no D major as a chord., Therefore I change the root note into D major so that I have the D major chord. But at that point my previos A minor chord turns to be a D major too... Thanks a lot

I don't have the app, but it sounds like you're changing the scale, and the app automatically creates chords using the scale notes. You need to find a way to redefine a single chord pad; maybe long press or double-tap on a pad?
Maybe you are in the wrong key to start with?
A D Maj would not appear in the key of A min as a diatonic chord, and vice versa.
Perhaps the actual key of the piece is in G Maj or E min?
hi and thanks all of you for the replies.
Uncleadave-> i've tried many things like lonpressing pads or even pressing 2 bottons in sequence. nohing. actually there is an 'assign' button that should let you play a chord on the keyboard and assign that to a pad in the chord pad. it worked once then i do not know why this seems no longer possible (a bug?).
Michael-m -> yes you are right saying that i should define a key from the beginning. the point in my opinion is that these tools should promote creativity that, at least to me, comes by exploring moment by moment a different solution (mainly nothing good, just to make things clear . if i find a possibilty, even a weird one out of tonality, then this program i think should push in this sense. actually this feature is present for instance in the app progression (same company) and also, but with many difficulties i have to admit, is possible in the chord chain of midi strummer.
again, I thank you for your comments
You can assign any chord that you like to one of the chord pads by holding down the notes of the chord on the pop-up keyboard and then pressing Assign at the same time. If it recognizes the chord (maj, min, dim) it will show up with the appropriate name. If it doesn't it will show something like 5(?), but it will actually use the chord notes anyway. And then if you want to unassign just tap Assign (it will turn yellow) and tap the pad you want to clear. Hope this helps. I can create a video if that still doesn't clear everything up fully. Also, feel free to hit me up for any other Evolver questions - I've used it quite a bit.
thanks edZAB. I did not try with the pop-up keyboard yet: good hint indeed. i did with the real keyboard and sometimes this works, sometimes not (did not undestand why). hope no need for the video but in case i will ask for that, thanks.
I have another question: progression can send midi separately for chords, arpeggios and strumming (and base). is there anyway i can choose a specific lane in evolver to receive each channel (lane a the cords only, lane b arp only ...)?
I was assuming that using diatonic chords in the chosen key is a limitation of the tool, or that it doesn’t give you the ability to modulate to other keys. Perhaps either of those is correct and you’re not able to play chromatically?
Sorry, maybe someone who knows it better can confirm the limitations or provide a solution.
@vinc66 - If you mean send different MIDI input channels to each Evolver lane, no, I don't believe so, but I have never tried. As a workaround, you could load multiple copies of Evolver. It is possible to copy and paste between projects (the copyable items are covered in the help).
michael-m -> the 'assign' button seems to be the solution to my question. Thanks!
EdZAB -> multple copies of the app is a good choice. Thanks you
Hi EdZAB, may I ask you also: am I allowed to play evolver only with its internal sounds or can that be routed in AUM to other virtual instruments? thanks a lot
I've looked into that myself, and I have not found a way to do it. I don't see any MIDI out coming from Evolver when I use it in AUM. I'm guessing that it was designed to be a self-contained "full performance" app, and not a sequencer/controller type app, but it would be interesting to know what the developer, Paul, had in mind.
Edit: Correction, and apologies, Evolver does support MIDI out, just as you pointed out, @vinc66, it's an option in the Zones section, where you can choose a MIDI out channel.
ahah! Paul the MusicMan you mean? I watched his tutorials on evolver. cool.
I've read of a midi out knob in the "zones" tab in the mid area. this is supposed to out sequencer lanes only. but in AUM no separate outs
yes, thanks and thanks to Paul. Evolver is for me a great tool indeed for experimenting new music patterns
