Can't Get That 50s Echo Reverb Sound ;-(
Hi,
I have an acoustic violin with an LR Baggs pickup. I am trying to hone out a 50s rockabilly type sound. I "think" I want a plate reverb that has that kind of "slap back" or sort of echo-ish sound.
I have tried several of the plate verbs in FabFilter R2; but none of them sound good, or sound like the old school echo plate reverb.
Here's a video of the dry and then several of the FabFilter R2 plate verbs:

I also have this plugin
https://apps.apple.com/ae/app/adverb2/id1373926760
but I am not getting any better results with it
Any thoughts?
Am I using the wrong settings? The wrong AUv3 plugin? Some of both?
Am I missing something else?
Thanks!!!!

You want a spring reverb!
Use a delay set to short delay, around 60-90ms to taste and then use a spring reverb

WOW!!! Gettin' vintage aint cheap is it????
Rockabilly is all about slap back echo isn’t it? Short delay time, zero feedback.
You need a tape delay for that, not a reverb. Well any delay would do but they used tape in the 50s.

It also has a spring reverb so can add a bit of ‘sproing’ too :-)
Rockabilly, as ppl mentioned, is about the slap back of no feedback, short delay time tape delay fed into a spring reverb. There aren't many spring reverbs that pass muster on ios... 13 for both the delay and quality spring reverb is like 6.50 for each effect. If you already have a tape delay and only need the spring reverb you'll spend about 10is anyway, and Springs has an actually good sounding one unlike others like Eventide.
£13 for a quality plugin is, relatively speaking, very cheap.
If you use logic you’re covered. There are loads of fx you can use — some of the pedals have pretty good spring reverbs as do the amp sims which you can run as clean DI just to get a bit of saturation and the spring ‘verb. Logic also has a tape delay built in and numerous other options with the guitar pedals.
BYOD has a free spring reverb
Btw audiothing plugins are only on sale for another 48 hours. £13 is the sale price!
If cost is an issue then iVCS3 has its spring reverb unit as an AUv3. miRack has a fairly decent module and also has plenty of delays that could be paired with it. ToneStack has at least one spring reverb FX. Those would be free alternatives if you already own the app. There are iR's of spring reverbs all over the net as well.
IMO Springs is worth the cost many times over for its quality and versatility.
Violin is going to challenging to get the same vibe from a spring reverb as you can get from a guitar which is generally more percussive and can make use of palm muting, etc. A lot of that slapjack sound comes from the reverb picking up those hard hitting and dampened sounds.
In the '50s the main reverb was plate and chamber (in studios).
For surf guitar and the like it was spring reverb.
I think the "sproing" could be the main character of the sound that is being looked for here. But I could be wrong.
But the classic rockabilly sound (of Sun Studios) was slapback echo (via tape) and no reverb.
A few of the best original sound examples would help!
For now I've found this:

and this:

and that (with some links):

I hope this helps a little.
Anything recorded at Sun Studios in the 50s
Yeah that’s what I thought! Tape delay, very short delay time, zero feedback. ‘Very short’ in 50s tape units would probably be in the 50-100ms range.
They didn’t have dedicate delays back then — they used tape machines to delay — the physical space between the read and write heads dictated the delay time.
I really like the “rockabilly slap” setting in VoiceRack FX for this. Hasn’t been updated in 7 years(!) but it’s AUv3 and works perfectly.
It’s absolutely the short tape delay, I use slap back on everything
Yea my thought exactly. Mostly plate before other techniques came along.
