Are there any new experimental apps on the horizon?

It's been a year since HILDA and 8 months since Noinputmixer and I've been hit by a massive wave of Ennui. I know that a bad workman blames his tools and we have literally everything available for us to play with already, but I can't help myself I'm hankering for something new to play with. Seems like this year we've had some more bread and butter style synths, loads of midi things and a whole mess of drum machines...

Does anyone know of anything wild and wacky coming out? I heard Modosc is working on something but his day job is very time consuming, I did get very excited by plug data but that seems to have stopped. Battalion seems to be excellent, but yet another drum machine. I was hoping they'd release lion but no joy there.

I don't even know what I want... Maybe something like Berna 3 or Aalto (that doesn't seem to be coming any time soon either.

Maybe the game has been changied too much already?

I know I sound like an entitled prick and I should really just focus on working with what I have.

But is there anything I should get unreasonably excited about getting released in the future!?

  • I forgot the name of it, but there was one app that was recently released. It's like a cascading waterfall but for sounds. There's a dedicated thread for it.

With the recent feature additions in Weeping wall… multiple instances feeding into each other could get pretty experimental. Probably the same with both the recent Neon and Harmony Bloom sequencers.

I got Noises on sale and that could definitely get fairly experimental with ease.

I haven’t yet either because I haven’t used the previous versions I purchased yet much lol

  • Good point, hasn't been a brilliant year so far for experimental stuff. Maybe just rotate back into some of the old ones that you haven't been using recently? Or simply combine the apps you have in fresh ways? They don't even need to be experimental apps. If you think in that modular way, the possibilities are endless! Or get into making your own no input mixer using feedback routing in AUM, using a bunch of different fx etc that aren't there in Igor's app?

  • It looks like the dev for sunvox has something in the works. His stuff is always pretty experimental

  • (SpaceFields just got an update making it easier to work with and you can use more instances than before, it used to be very heavy on the cpu.)

Oh, yes! That is my dream too! They seem like they would be perfect on a touch surface!

  • Have you seen Aqeel Adams (@aqeelaadam ?), maker of Weeping Wall, new software preview of Ridgewalk?

Seams like a ambient looper/recorder thingy

You're totally right. I've been trying to make some weird droney things in mirack maybe I should expand to aum in general!?

Just a shame he has a deep-seated hatred of the 'touchscreen paradigm"

    So true!
But let's be honest, expanding modern comfort zones have made apps that even compose music by the touch of a button more popular, and looking back in synth history, there have always been a lot more preset players than knob tweakers 😊

  • Alexander Zolotov teaser:

  • Didn’t David Bowie once said “buy a synthesizer and throw the manual away”?

he said porting them to iOS would be impossible.

That’s another good idea - any app becomes great for ‘experimental’ results when you don’t know how to use it 🤣

Some apps lend them better to the process than others, though. Hilda comes to mind but there’s lots

    Eno I Think

I think it must be both. I did a search, I do see Bowie as well as Eno, and someone wrote this on a forum: “I once read that when Eno was working with Bowie, they would buy a new synth and throw out the manual, just diving in to see what they could do rather than trying to do what the synth was "supposed" to do.”
