M-VAVE SK2

So i went ahead and grabbed the newest m-vave simply because i travel a lot for work and make most of my music in hotel rooms and park tables… and there’s really no Bluetooth options for MIDI keys. I was originally going to grab the arturia minilab 3 but no BT which is key to my keys.
The new m-vave also has USB-c which is a bonus for my iPad pro if i want to plug in directly.

Anyway… the keyboard is decent, the pads aren’t great.. at least with my first run… they are absolutely no akai level pads. There are kinda spriny/spongey so if you are looking to make beats with koala or something i wouldn’t suggest this keyboard yet, but I’ll update that if anything changes with more time.

You can create 8 presets i believe. What I’ve done since i cannot figure out how to change the MIDI channel out, is use cubeSuite to do it then save preset one as MIDI channel 1, preset 2 as MIDI channel 2 and so on.. so that when i have multiple synths in AUM i can set them to the appropriate MIDI channel and just flip the preset on the mvave to switch to control them.

MIDI learn works on the moog apps, haven’t had luck yet on audiokit apps, even with trying in the aum controls, but that’s probably and hopefully just user error.

Does anyone know if i you can change the MIDI out from this device other than by using presets?

Anyway just wanted to let you all know that this keyboard is decent enough for what i do, i am no key master, just tinker and jam and hope for a good riff. But if you want BT then id say its totally worth 100$ and the original sk is 89$ on amazon and both are a little cheaper on ali.

  • Hi. I see that the knobs are encoders. Have you checked whether they are configured as absolute (0-127) or relative (one value for up, one for down, maybe 127 and 0, or 65 and 63)? Absolute likely works with most apps. Relative is nice because you don't have to match the knob to the current value.

I kinda laughing at the fact that the keyboard is sub $100 and everything else in the pic is over a grand. Not meant to be a comment on @reasOne s spending or budget.

Hahaha you know i was thinking the same thing about my own set up 🤣
You got a cut corners somewhere to afford the other more important stuff though 😎
I was trying to find a better MIDI controller but the BT market is super limited, i think its because of transport controls not working with BT MIDI or something, being the reason they aren’t made by bigger companies like arturia

    Not yet but i will!

I myself bought this MIDI-controllers just a few weeks ago.
I’m perhaps a little bit more positive to the keys & pads on this - really like the onboard chargable battery, really fast Bluetooth 5.3 and the rest, like arps, chords, DAW-remote…

  • M-Vave is taking over just because others ignore BT. I just wonder why because the benefits are obvious, not only for iPads.

Looks like it's coming straight from Arturias Chinese factory lines though 😂

  • Update: MIDI Learn works great over Bluetooth with all apps that I’ve tried in AUM. At first i was missing a step 🫣

Haha yeah it seems like an arturia prototype reject in some ways 🤣

They are going to make a killing until other companies start bringing BT into the game. Good for them tho, I’m happy with this purchase but my demands are light for a keyboard.
I just need BT, knobs/keys and the ability to set scales. I’m no world class key player but i can stumble into something that works for what i do and these keys feel fine for that. The arturia bed feels more weighty and quality but they lost my sale and I’m good with it!

Dear ReasOne - have you solved the thing with changing MIDI OUT from M-Vave SMK-25II?

If not, check out the iOS app CubeSuite - there you have plenty of things to config into your new keyboard, including changing the channel for MIDI OUT...

A way to fix this directly from the keyboard hasn't been find yet...

    https://apps.apple.com/se/app/cubesuite/id1576180487

  • Any success changing midi channel on the fly? The bottom button on the left says sc/ch maybe holding that and hitting the pads will change the channel? That’s how they do it on Novation launchkey and beatstep.

The SC/CH you see on the left is just a mark for Smart Scale/Chord Mode...

Yes sir that’s what i did, cubesuite then saved 4 presets so far, each one just on a different MIDI out channel. Thankfully that app exists because it has access the keyboard interface doesn’t give ya lol

Just by saving presets with cubesuite. Super easy and took no effort. But i still wish i could do it right from the dang keyboard!

Ah of course. I thought it was scene/midi channel 🙄

Ok, so 8 presets would be enough for my needs. How does one change presets on the unit itself? Is it relatively easy or a finger dance?

  • The Cme x key air …one of the best iOS controllers ( at least in my case). Built like a tank …cool features .

Real easy, you hold down BT and MCP and then each pad changes color that has a preset saved. You also save them then exact same way just press empty pad

Yaaah but that one’s like 230$! I needed some knobs too tho

    Faderfox makes dope stuff!
I can’t feel my digitone since it was a gift 🎁 I’m not mad at all about that but… it does leave me obligated to keep it 😋

  • The digitone is actually a lot of fun. I take it to the park all the time

  • thanks for the review! i have a really positive impression of the 8 track bt mixer they sell and their chocolate foot switch. will probably get this and the 4x4 pads at some point too just to complete the collection.

they are going to get all of my money if the big companies don't wake up, and even then there's no way they can beat the pricing...i got the m-vave mixer for like $30 shipped....

I honestly think they just do not want to pay to retool cases and test batteries and Bluetooth modules. it just isn't worth their bottom line when people are still content buying Premium Cables. Also don't want the customer services headaches of becoming wireless connection technicians

  • I bought the smk-25 a week ago and needed some extra info about midi and found the Discord server of the developer. Any doubts you might have, he is very responsive there.
BTW , I love this little thing, cheap but make the job great for me. The Bluetooth midi function is great.

No worries. Hope the developer replies to you soon. Is not a very active server but he usually responds to the requests in a short time

  • For now i have 8 presets to change channels in aum. Still hoping for a better solution so i can create more complex presets

  • I have this keyboard and I wondered why it never bothers me that it only outputs on Channel 1.

The answer is: Because I use AUM and I just enable a keyword on an App by App basis in AUM.

If I did want to re-channel the keyboard MIDI I would use a Streambyter or Mozaic script.

I rarely use another DAW because the flexibility of AUM for managing complex MIDI assignments and
allowing chains of MIDI FX processing app is the best feature of AUM, IMHO. Once you get used to thinking this way other DAWs just leave you scratching your head wondering why they “just don’t get it.”

I use aum and occasionally Logic.
But i don’t want to disconnect from each channel and reconnect the keyboard to each channel when i want to switch…. Thankfully the preset option makes it possible to flip from channel to channel

But agreed aum is the best thing ever. I want it put into hardware!
