My Journey with Android (Formerly "A Tale of Two Koala Sample Flips")

So before I went into temporary burnout, I participated in two Koala sample flip challenges (okay, one of them wasn't finished in time for the live beat cast). The most recent one was this...

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/w3tz5pk9678u8mdt3cngu/JWM-Le-Grand-Bidou-converted.m4a?rlkey=bavr3osn6752vkc3o9hq0qqrd&dl=0

...where I flipped this song...

...in the French Touch style. On yesterday's beat cast (at 1h52m), Remi played my track, was bowled over with surprise, afterwards expressed he liked it, and compared me to Daft Punk.

https://www.youtube.com/live/8TRuHvH425M?si=EvnFkLIv74euFgMu

I can't think of a higher honour than being compared to the likes of Daft Punk and Justice. 🤩 I idolise both musical duos.

Then before "Le Grand Bidou" we have some pure, corny, somewhat cringy and embarrassing cheese, lol.

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/fh932po688wdi8dvoysi2/JWM-Stuffed-Animal-converted.m4a?rlkey=z0nz2gtiyejogni2kwq5k7t06&dl=0

The goal of this particular flip challenge was to flip Nintendo sounds. So I sampled some 8-bit NES sounds direct from Youtube for oneshots, and I also sampled K.K. Slider's voice to use as a carrier to vocode my vocals, and the K.K. Slider guitar (on which I applied a chorus effect to give it stereo width). The original plan for the vocals was simply to sample K.K. Slider vowel sounds and hocket between those like heard in the various Animal Crossing games, but then I had an idea to write lyrics, which delayed the track by a whole day, which is why I missed the beat cast. 😂

I guess I'm still a "Nintendo kid" at heart.

Yes, both are sample flips, the instrumentals of which were done in Koala Sampler on iPhone. (Vocals for "Stuffed Animal" were recorded and processed in Cubasis 3 on iPhone, and both tracks were mastered in Logic on iPad.)

I originally posted "Stuffed Animal" to Soundcloud, but I became just a little paranoid about Nintendo copyright striking it despite the fact I transformed the K.K. Slider voice by using it as a carrier. So, to avoid possible legal issues, both that song and "Le Grand Bidou" are simply on Dropbox and shared here.

🤓 Hope you enjoy. Cheers and happy Saturday (or Sunday depending which timezone you are in).

  • Now to veer offtopic a little. I got my new Samsung tablet from Amazon today. I really love it so far, but with some limitations.

    1. For whatever reason I cannot access the entire file structure like I can on iOS. (Used to be the other way around years ago lol). So I have to import my samples into FLSM as zip files.

    2. I cannot seem to import multi-gb zip files, so in other words I am unable to import the KB6 zip. Also no Sounds of KSHMR nor Black Octopus samples. (I'll try to break up the KB6 files into smaller zip files to import into FLSM. I can go without KSHMR and Black Octopus, but I can't live without my drum machine samples lol.)

    3. This forced me to see what other smaller sample packs I have in my Image-Line account and came across some hidden gems I forgot I have, including the infamous Deadmau5 Xfer sample pack!

    4. I'll be exploring other sample packs once I wake up, including Sample Radar's free packs which are also reasonably small in size and therefore easy to import.

And through these limitations, I discovered what type of music I wish to focus on! Mid-to-late 2000s Minimal House and Electro House and any genre along those lines. Now I've a direction for my album!

Regarding number 1, Android’s file access situation became a bit more restricted like iOS for security a few versions back. I don’t have a device running the very latest Android version so i don’t know if further changes have happened since?

You can read about it in the Introduction of this section in the AEMS manual here. Cheers.

Seems like the security restrictions are still prevalent in this version of Android (I think it is 14). Apple's file system is far more open than this. Ah well, just gotta work through the limitations one at a time.

Though it’s certainly not the ‘access everything’ it used to be, I’m surprised you find Apple’s file system more open than Android? What can you access on iPad which you can’t on the Samsung?

As i said, i haven’t got a device running the latest Android version so i might not be right with the current version, but things are much more accessible when you connect your Android device to a PC. That would be a way to quickly and easily copy folders of samples over.

Ah, I didn't know that, lol. Okay, looks like I'll have to find the laptop I use with my OP-1 Field. (It's lying around somewhere in here, lol.)

    Cheers mate.

  • Okay, some quick updates. I got my KB6 drum samples into FLSM on Android by opening the zip, rezipping folders bit by bit, and then importing bit by bit into FLSM. That worked a treat, and now I should be good on drum samples for a long time. Like I said, not going to import Sounds of KSHMR nor Black Octopus into FLSM on Android as I want to try a different style.

Think I'm going to try producing like Deadmau5. Maybe mid-2000s Deadmau5, or something. Easy style to grok, but fun and easy to produce (for me personally).

The third track created for the upcoming "Do Androids Dream of Music?" album. It is called "A Crystal Afternoon". I took heavy inspo from Crystal Method for this one. I'm digging into more classic Electronic music from the late 90s to the early 2010s. Not Supersaw Trance, Hands-Up, and "feel-good" tracks, but darker music like Crystal Method, Deadmau5, Feed Me, Wolfgang Gartner, etc. Going more experimental on a couple of tracks too.

  • So since I last wrote here, I produced the Deadmau5-styled track, a frantic more experimental EDM track, the Crystal Method track, a Country/EDM crossover track, and I just finished the titular track "Do Androids Dream of Music?" which is 90s Eurodance (including the 90s Pizzi sound as made famous by artists such as Faithless (Insomnia) and Sash! (Encore Une Fois)) at first, then flows into a breakdown, a buildup, and then? A metallic Brostep drop!? (Needed to "represent the Androids" somehow.) On the side I also was paid to make a beat for a rapper, which I also did in FLSM on Android! Yes, all done in FLSM on Android, and all basses in the Brostep drop of the titular track were created from scratch, no presets.

  • Great track Jim, you completely nailed the Justice sound.

    Congrats on getting featured. 😎👍
