New M2 iPad Air vs M4 iPad Pro

I'm still using a 2018 12.9-inch iPad Pro, and I was hoping to buy a replacement today, in the smaller 11-inch size (I love the 12.9, but I use my MacBook way more these days so I don't need the extra inches).

The thing is, the new Pro doesn't really offer anything new. It's amazing, to be sure. The screen and M4 chip are impressive, and so on. But it still has just one port.

The 11-inch Air looks like the best bet, but it doesn't have Face ID, and the current 11-inch M2 Pro has the crappy old screen.

What do you all think of these two models, as they relate to each other?

@mistercharlie does the new Air display have high refresh rate ("ProMotion")? It's one of those things that I wouldn't want to downgrade from. I didn't think it would matter to me that much, but it was a similar experience to when I first had a Retina display.

In the comparison page, only the Pro has Pro Motion, but perhaps the air still does 120Hz without it.

Also to consider: way better speakers, and 16GB ram on the pro, vs 8GB for the Air.
Both have 8GB RAM, unless you go for the 1TB or 2TB Pro, which have 16GB.

(Edited to add RAM for the new Air)
    (Edited again with RAM corrections)

  • If you got used to 120Hz on the Pro going back to 60Hz could suck. No thunderbolt could become a problem depending on your external storage devices or screen setups. The previous Air can't display 4k @ 60Hz, not sure if that changed wit the M2.

  • 11" 256gb Pro is now only £150 dearer than I payed for my 256gb Air, so the Pro is actually cheaper than the last 256 model in the UK. Might add a Pro to my Air when I've finished paying it off lol

I suspect the new OLED display helps them a bit with that cost reduction.

  • 13 inches of awesome OLED gorgeousness. Wow.

  • The new Air looks plenty capable for audio duties. I’m sure the Oled display is great but I don’t think it’ll make such a difference.
Don’t know much about the ProMotion thingy… just checked and my 3rd generation iPad Pro (M1) has it while the new Air which is superior (M2) doesn’t. Seems to me like they’re sort of stripping it down on purpose… Is that ProMotion thing very noticeable?. Would I miss it?.

  • I didn't realise that the OLED iPad is £1300 in the UK. A big ouch.

It’s a professional tool (regardless of what one’s stance is regarding the connections issue), so it isn’t a cheap toy. It never has been.

Yeah. I have an M1 iPad Pro 11 inch. They are expensive

There's a "limit framerate" option in the accessibility settings which you could use to simulate not having it, it sets the framerate to 60Hz.

The new 13" Air is the dream machine for music. Larger screen, fast enough chips and large enough RAM.

It is a dedicated machine for music and some google sheet finance stuff. The better Pro screen/look worth zero to me.

Everything adds up and there must be somewhere to cut the corner.

  • With a 2nd gen iPad Pro, I’m comfortable skipping also this generation. Plus, Apple may have to design future iPads to have easily replaceable batteries, which I’m all for. I’m also not impressed with the specs/price ratio. Why limit 16 GB memory to the most expensive models, other than to upsell. It’s nasty. Eventually, I’ll upgrade, but not yet.
I listened to the entire presentation and mentally stripped out all fluff adjectives. It really made it all much less enticing.

I hate to tell you, but they are never again going to offer a user-replaceable battery for either iPads or iPhones. It will be possible for a repair store to replace a screen or battery, but not a user. They’ve already seen what happens when people who don’t know how to fix things end up causing a battery rupture or explosion.

  • I prefer Touch ID over Face ID. I like blue better than silver or “space black”. (Although Apple’s idea of “blue” seems to be more “a pale reflection of a far away blue”.) I didn’t see anything on the spec comparison that I probably couldn’t live without. An Air would likely serve my needs.

But since my iPad is my primary computing device, I decided to go top-of-the-line. Plus that’ll likely help extend wanting to upgrade again by another year or two when the time comes.

And I think it was still less than I spent on any Mac when the Mac was my primary device. Not counting the time I got an employee discount on a discontinued Quadra 650.

  • First Geekbench results for the M4:

    Single core: 3082 versus 2539 of M2 or 2908 of A17
    Multi core: 13063 versus 9631 of M2 or 7234 of A17

Agghhghh 🤦🏻😱 Just tried it and it’s horrible with the limited framerate!.
Now I wish I hadn’t unknowingly lived with the ProMotion thingy!. I don’t think I can go back… It sucks.
I’m pretty sure they’re limiting this on purpose. It doesn’t make sense that an old pro has better refresh rate than a new Air that is x4 more powerful.
This is a really worrying discovery. Thanks for ruining my dreams 😆

I have some friends and a brother that got both the 8GB 12.9” M1 and also 8GB 11” M2 - have never heard any complains from them when they edit videos in Lumafusion and also big documents in Affinity Suite.

The extremely fast storage memory acts good as a virtual RAM in critical situations.

So, as a user it ain’t that big difference in performance that we all imagine.

Lo siento. I'm glad that I never got used to it, it's how they keep you within their Pro upgrade cycle 😈

Only if you want the 13 inch model! I bought an 11 inch 512GB OLED for £1,199.00. The cheapest one (with 256GB storage) is £999.

I think the new iPad M4 is overkill still for most musicians real needs. I still haven't even maxed out my 11inch M2.
Once Apple opens up the iOS to let developers make more powerful apps, I don't see the need for all that power. Even the M1 is a great powerhouse.

  • I’m thinking I may as well stick with my 2018 Pro until at least WWDC, to see if iPadOS 18 will make the iPad capable of using all that power.

I also have 2018 12.9 pro and every day I am in awe at what amazing device this is……..still !! My concern is that although I don’t really need to upgrade, my 2018 pro still holds a lot of value for selling it but will soon plummet with these new devices on the market.

I have a strong suspicion that WWDC will unveil a number of reasons to justify the M4 in the Pro . Perhaps something game changing for musicians…….?? If not, I may just go for an M2 12.9 pro from previous lineup.

  • Until more hosts like AUM have multicore support, we can't take advantage of all the power of the fastest devices.

But Logic does have full multicore support, so there is that....
