ipad apps suddenly taking forever to load or not loading on m1 mac
I've had a bunch of ipad apps open flawlessly and quickly for me on my M1 laptop (iDensity, all the Cem Olcay Bud apps, Fieldscaper, Soundscaper, Zeeon, Sunrizer, Riffler Flow, Tera Pro, Kronecker, Mersenne, Lagrange, Laplace, Glitchscaper, Noinputmixer, Soundsaw, Sunvox).
Some open fine like Punchlab, Mollilooper, VAPoly, and Overdrive Synth.
Apps will either take 10min to open, never open, or in the case of Sunvox, Relic Waves, and Fractal Bits, I'll get a blank window.
I was literally using Melodybud with no problems yesterday afternoon in standalone. I've installed some vsts for Reaper between now and then, but I don't see why that would affect these apps.
Any ideas? I'm pretty unhappy about this situation and would appreciate any help.

Yeah, multiple times. Even did an OS update. It's not my security permissions -- if they were too low then I wouldn't be able to open ANY iOS apps. A few continue to open immediately, but most are taking about 15 minutes to open.
If you also start the app Activation Monitor and check what’s happens there, CPU activity, Memory Allocation etc etc - you may see some hussle there if you’re lucky…
Hmm, haven't seen any obscene memory spikes. Is there something I should be looking for?the good news is that at least the auv3s work as plug-ins still, though it's a shame that apps like FieldScaper, Soundscaper, and iDensity no longer load easily. They are fun to play with on a computer since downloading and using samples is so much less of a pain with a computer and a real OS.
I just can't figure out why some of these apps that literally opened fine yesterday are all of a sudden taking so long to open, especially when there are other ios music apps that are similar that have no problems. I was about to pull the trigger on Logic since I have so many auv3s that can work on Mac, but unfortunately I can't test any of the auv3 midi fx apps like the Bud apps since Reaper and Garageband don't recognize them. It's definitely given me some pause.
Can you use a backup to take the computer to the state it was before you installed the Reaper vsts and see if it runs fine?
Or uninstal the Reaper vsts?
Yeah, I probably should just take the time to delete vsts. Already deleted Reaper with no change. I don't see how VSTs/AUs would do anything since they just sit there in a folder until used by a DAW (or am I wrong? Don't see anything in the Activity monitor that would suggest that any of these freebie downloads is up to no good).
I'm debating doing clean reset/wipe of the computer since I don't h again, this doesn't really affect me in a big way other than I really enjoyed using idensity, fieldscaper, and soundscaper with an actual computer for file management of samples -- but it's just the weirdest thing. Even today, Future Drummer was opening immediately this afternoon, and right now I've waited for 5min and it's still not open yet. I just figured I couldn't be the only person who has experienced this -- guess I was hoping someone could at least explain what was going on. I hate this seemingly random computer drama. Say what we will about iOS and its problems -- almost never had strange OS behavior from my iPads in nearly a decade using the platform, but OS woes have reared their ugly heads regularly for me on Linux, Mac, and Windows boxes.
I’ve had this same issue with Drambo, if it loads it’s 10 minutes later. M1 MacBook Air.
Then recently it was Lumafusion that is doing the same thing.
I’ve done all the tech advice I could look up. I’m pretty sure it’s an OS glitch of some kind.
@NoncompliantBryant . I suspect these very long loading delays may be due to repeated network/internet timeouts. Are you logged in to iCloud, etc. with the same Apple ID that bought these iOS apps?
Thanks for the help. I am...would turning off wifi and trying be something to try? To me knowledge, few of the apps in question use icloud for presets etc..
I just tried loading apps without wifi on -- not sure if that would have handled things if your thought about internet timeouts was correct, but no dice.
Thanks for confirming this...it's really frustrating, as Drambo on m1 was a big thing for me. The loading issue has really made it less fun to use Drambo as I need to play a big waiting game every time I want to use the fantastic sequencer to bang out some patterns. Do you use any DAWs on Mac? Seeing any issues with AU3V3S? Koala fx has been loading without the gui for me recently. Grr.
It's quite annoying, I haven't even had it load in a while now. Currently timing it to see how long it takes.
EDIT: 4:58 - It took to load Drambo.
EDIT: 3:58 - It took for Salome to load into Drambo.
EDIT: 5:58 - It took for Overdrive Synth into Drambo.
EDIT: 3:58 - Koala FX to load into Drambo.
I don't, I have a M1 Air with 256 GB so Ableton Live was way too large of an app for me to keep on deck, I usually stick to iOS, but I recently cleared some space so I'll download it and give it a go and report back.
FINAL EDIT.
I'm stoked I took the time to do this test.
So KoalaFX wouldn't load the GUI into Ableton Live Lite 12
But, every other music app I have loaded instantly, including drambo. Great workaround to just open Ableton and load what you want to use. I don't know anything about Ableton Live Lite and I don't have the mental capacity to mess with it today, but I think it's nice that those iOS apps can load instantly in Ableton.
Hope this helps! @NoncompliantBryant
Thanks a lot for the tests and insight!
I got Logic and see that apps tend to load instantly. However, the IAA apps like Fieldscaper and Soundscaper are of course not AU so they're basically unusable.
Also, I just get a blank screen when I try loading Koala Fx into Garageband, Logic, or Reaper. Sounds like Koala Fx works for you both in Drambo and Ableton?
I only got Koala FX to work in Drambo not in Ableton. Bit strange but it’s the lone standout but I don’t have a ton of apps that are useable on both iOS and MacOS.
You can always use iDAM for getting sounds from the iPad too
Thanks for the update! I've been mostly using the iPad for sequencing in logic. Not as much of a headache as getting audio in...I love my ios sounds but logic and the desktop synths I have do a serviceable job and sticking to them for a desktop project makes the iPad to computer workflow much more streamlined and enjoyable for me. I really wish all of the Bud apps that are available on desktop actually worked in Logic though. @cem_olcay has some fantastic sequencers, but a bunch of them just stop after a few bars. Patternbud, Snakebud, and Musebud are some of the apps that do this Musebud works but if I use the input to drive another midi fx (Remidi 2) at some point the Musebud output stops triggering Remidi. I've worked around this by putting a Logic Transpose in between Musebud and Remidi...for some reason it ensures that the Musebud notes actually trigger Remidi's midi slice pads. The Kebarp gui doesn't appear in Reaper or Logic, which is sad since it's such a clean and easy sequencer.
Damn that seems like a nice workaround. I need to get my head around iDAM to get sounds from iPad to Live. Or to mess with Link more. I can't quite figure it out. I should do a full 101 on Ableton honestly. I've been going at it all hacky for the times I've used it.
Random but relevant, for the last week Drambo on MacOS has been loading within a few seconds. Never more than 5. Just thought I would mention this since we were talking about it earlier! On Sonoma 14.5. @NoncompliantBryant
