King of FM, King Of Digital, Thump, Axon 3, Relic Flow: Circle Of Blood

Circle of Blood, a lurid tale of a coven of baby-sacrificing witches masquerading as nuns in the catacombs of the Vatican City, released to little fanfare at the height of the Giallo craze in 1970s Italy; Luca Vozza’s only, now-lost movie was quickly eclipsed by the more accomplished work of contemporaries Mario Bava and Dario Argento. Yet it nevertheless acquired a cult reputation, not only for its graphic depictions of torture and murder, but also because, it was rumoured, that some of the rites depicted were real…

Axon 3 is my new go to for itchy hats and similar. Thump is just fabulous for doom drums of all flavours, and Relic Flow might just be my new fave thing of all. I could easily imagine making whole tracks from it alone. The Kings are now really very good too, especially when some vintage cheese is required and, yes, I admit it, I wheeled out the D1 Sigur Bos preset again. Love love love it.

A triple pack of Neon did the sequencing, and gave me a kind of Carpenter/Goblin vibe on the Kings, already sounding very vintage horror movie. And so: here we are.

Your attention pathetically begged for.

And watch out for demonic nuns.

Relentlessly menacing stuff! I love the synth drums, it's reminding me to have a play with Axon 3!

The synths around the 1:40 mark are properly edgy! Love those sounds, and especially the feedback at the end. Just when you think it's dark enough!

  • Beautiful.

Relic Waves and Fractal Bits are used every time I open AUM.

As a listener to the whole piece, I would have loved to hear the relentless motif weave in and out, velocity wise....panning left to right....fade out....fade in....

    Just to break it up.

Also to have the motif play on it's own. With those eerie vocals in the background

  • @klownshed @dasgoods : thanks both for the listens and comments.

Yup, @dasgoods , you got me. I’m lazy, basically. In the absence of proper editable automation in AUM, I dash these things off live, doing a minimal amount of manual mixing on the fly. It’s a quick and dirty way of working, more or less a live jam, but it means the final mix often lacks structure.

What I should do is record all stems to full length, and export them to a proper DAW (no excuses, I have Bitwig and Ableton) to structure the individual parts properly. I know the piece would be better for it, and your suggestions are spot on.

But: I’m lazy. What I need is a remix engineer on speed dial…

  • Rhythmic, melodic, predictable … what’s happening to you ?
    PS Excellent track 😊🙏

  • :) Thank you. I’ll try harder next time…

Not sure if you know of midi mixer for AUM, it gives you basic automation and snapshots you can use while playing live.

    Lovely creepy sounds, btw.

  • Horrorshow!

  • Lovely stuff, like an eighties revival of the genre 😱

I just spent at least half an hour searching for the lost classic, it’s definitely not in my search field, sounds ace though, witches disguised as nuns, I think I’ve had nightmares and fever dreams of that as a child…😅

(there actually was a movie that I saw the start of at my grandma’s house that had nuns looking after children in some Swiss castle type place and i became convinced they were concealing some horror. I was only about six and screamed the place down. I remember my grandma and her sister bundling me upstairs to sleep while it was still light outside, which only compounded the horror in some meta fashion😂)

@LinearLineman : Ah! A fellow Nadsat native. Well, I always did like a malenky bit of the old ultraviolence ;)

@Krupa : small confession time. As I think you deduced, I invented the movie, the write up, and the director of it… Somewhat inspired by this:

A greater example of a giallo that never was.

    :)

@deadpoetlive : Yes, thanks for reminding me. I actually have it, perhaps I should dig it out and give it another go. But I didn’t get on with it when I first tried using it. Again, too much set up, not enough spontaneity for me. I add and delete channels as I go all the time in a very freeform way. I just need editable knob and slider automation as an inherent property of each AUM channel, no more and no less, something I’ve banged on about forever. That, or stop being so lazy! :)

  • @Svetlovska i did kinda, but I was holding out a nugget of hope that it was real and would turn up in some lost archive…
