Sculpting one audio file with another one

I was wondering if there are any apps or techniques that allow us to use audio recording A as a source and then use totally different audio recording B to modulate it. Preferably in the way that I can use the amplitude/envelope of recording B to sculpt out the same envelopes in recording A and then even go a step further by muting all frequencies in recording A that are not present in both recording A and B.

Perhaps I complicate my explanation too much, but I dont know how I can explain it simpler. It comes down to using the content of one recording to sculpt the content of another and by doing that having a new audio file that marries them both without mixing the two signals directly.

🙏🏻

  • I don’t think this is really what you’re describing, but it’s worth checking out anyway!

It might require more than one app to do all that.

Envelope followers capture the amplitude envelope of incoming audio and convert it to a CC stream. FAC Envolver is the one I use.

Any vocoder app will handle the frequency part.

Ah thank you for this. I had this back when I was on iPad 2. I’ve been wanting it back again but couldn’t remember the name. Plus, I just assumed it’s been abandoned, but long and behold it’s AUv3!

Ooh yes I remember seeing this before, I have other apps by this dev, going to look into this one! Thanks 🙏🏻

EDIT: This looks pretty spot on at first glance! Thanks again will explore it more.

Thank you! Thats a great idea. FAC envolver is something I already own in the bundle. Havent used it yet, but now I will!

The vocoder idea is pretty sharp! Will try this, although I already expect that it will not work exactly as I mean, because it will downgrade the resolution of the entire frequency range into smaller bands if my logic is correct.

  • The Meta Modulator in miRack might be interesting for you, it's only mono, but nothing prevents you from using one on the left and one on the right... It's a port of mutable instruments warps, here's the manual:

I've long looked at this vocoder wondering if it would do basically what you're after 🤷🏽‍♂️

  • Drambo can do all that. It has an envelope follower and a ppitch detector you could use to modulate whatever you want. You could also use filter bands to separate the original sound and again use env followers/pitch detectors on each band for extra modulation sources.
Although what you seem to be after is some spectral morphing (like phase vocoder) and that I don’t think we have… there was one from csound labs (boulanger) but it simply doesn’t work and development stopped years ago so I’d say it’s a non-option
