Band jam multitrack strategy and fun
I’ve been hardly making music on my own lately, which is great as it’s mostly been replaced by jamming on a fairly regular basis with other musicians actually in the same room. We have over the years slowly come together more often and usually just phone record the room if a session hits a sweet spot, but last week I took my (‘twas Svetlovska’s in the first place) trusty old ICA4 along and recorded drums/kb, bass and the two guitars on separate tracks (basically either took an out from whichever amp or went in between in the guitar amp’s cases) and just recorded everything.
Which is great, sounds bloody lovely, but it’s a lot of material, and mostly junk. Has anyone ever dealt with their jams in this way and edited something interesting out of them? I’m thinking I can maybe rearrange and reorder stuff so that it’s got some sort of structure being what arises spontaneously and then we maybe go back and play that better and in the right order…
Maybe it’s a dead end and a silly thing to try, and maybe imposes more order on what is just a pleasurable and rewarding activity in itself, but maybe not?
Any experiences/ideas/techniques/strategies to share?
Cheers,
Chris
