Anyone here using an external USB drive with iPad?

Sold the Mac mini and I am eschewing a desktop paradigm altogether....Planning on the new iPad Air 13" but as the storage options are so expensive was thinking of the base model 128gb and using an external USB data drive.

My question is are there any folks here already doing this and what has been your experience with it so far?

I am also planning of using Logic Pro (iOS) as my main DAW....

For a brief time I used an external spinning hard drive with my iPad Pro (WD My Passport 1TB), but it kept dismounting every time the iPad Pro went to sleep, so I ended that experiment. I never tried it again using an SSD so I have no idea if the dismounting drive issue was solved or not.

  • I use multiple USB drives to dump projects. My current iPad is 128gb and majority of that storage is used. As of yesterday I dumped 9 to 10gb worth of AUM projects onto a thumb drive. I’ve never had any problems with the USB drives used to store art projects made in Procreate. I wish I had more memory, however the USB drives works fine.

  • Nice, thanks folks - appreciate the feedback. I will probs move to a SSD down the track, at the mo, just using, or wanting ti use, existing gear.

  • I use a Toshiba T5 SSD. Has worked great for moving data around and for storing data.

@pax-eterna, it's important to set realistic expectations over what you can and can't do with an external drive.

    • You can't install programs on them. They will be no help with that storage at all.
    • Very few apps that use large sample libraries can store their library files on them.
    • Those that do may experience glitches without a decent performance SSD.
    • A large percentage of apps still fetch files from external drives and import them locally even though you select the files from the external drive.
    • With a few exceptions, such as PureSynth Platinum and AudioLayer, USB storage is mainly useful for archival storage.

I'm not saying USB storage isn't useful, only hopefully clarifying what they are and aren't useful for. iPadOS/iOS is a lot more limiting than other operating systems in that regard.

  • I use a Samsung T7 SSD drive all the time with my iPad, music and video stuff. Works great, never had by issues with disconnecting or it getting too hot (it does get warm sometimes).

Yep that I know. It's for the storage of all the WAV data being used and generated in Logic Pro (as per the OP ;) ) The various instruments will of course have to have the data in main storage memory. The difference between a 512g iPad Air and the 1 TB is HUGE!!! As is the difference between the 128 and 512! So any way I can mitigate space being used is good!

    Thanks!
That's the SSD I am currently using with the Mac mini

  • I am also trying to ascertain whether the new iPad Air (13") with the M2 will represent better operations than the 5th Gen iPad Pro 12.9" - with the prices of used iPad pros down here not that much different to the new Air, it has me thinking....

If your budget can stretch to the 1TB model then the gen 5 pro would be a great choice based on RAM, display, and I think maybe CPU cores as well. Below 1TB I think they’d both have 8GB RAM, so the choice might be less clear.

All the time to move samples, pics, projects, documents, audio, video, etc. there’s also several larger apps that let you use an external SSD to store the data and use in real time. Like all the Midiculous aka gospel musicians apps, sfizz, etc…

With the Pro you're also buying into the pro motion tech Apple uses to make the UI extra fluid. Once you got used to that it's hard to go back to non pro devices. It basically keeps you in the Pro device upgrade cycle if you don't turn this setting off and limit the framerate in settings from the get go during initial setup, something to keep in mind.

  • There is one thing I wanted to get rid of by switching to the iPad, and that is to minimize the number of cables. I now have a USB hub plugged directly into the iPad, which also has a MicroSD slot. I use this for soundfonts, XinematiX and all the GospelMusicians apps. My iPad is only 64GB, but the microSD solution is perfectly fine for my purposes, and doesn't limit me in speed, which of course the SSD has dramatically higher. What I underestimated is the number of apps I "must" to have and their size. My next iPad in the future will definitely have at least 256GB and a display larger than 10.9".

  • I’ve been using one of these for a while, works great .

    SanDisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD

Thanks, did not know that. Could change my mind a bit I think and try and dig in for the extra.

Ahhh yes, thanks for reminding me of that!!

Transfer speed is a major difference between Air and Pro. Only the iPad Pro has Thunderbolt USB 4 speed

Thanks - yes I think (hope) I found a good deal on an iPad Pro 5th Gen with 1tb and 16g at about a third of the cost of the whole package I was looking at from Apple (albeit new).

Owner reckons it's been well looked after and he's an "Apple person" and is upgrading to the new ipad.

What other apps can access samples stored on external drives, besides the ones already mentioned (AudioLayer by Harry Gohs; Pure Synth by MIDIculous, and their other apps; isfizz by Ryouta Kira)? Are there any more?

I have a 64GB iPad and I’ve managed to get into making music by almost exclusively using synthesis-oriented apps for sound generation, and avoiding anything heavily sample based. The exception is Patterning, which I can get a lot of mileage out of by being selective with the samples I install, and keeping it limited to extremely short drum sounds. After all, plenty of amazing music has been composed and performed using samplers with no more than 64 MB of storage! But that space can get eaten up fast once you start playing with sampled synth sound libraries.

  • I love this thing and it says it works with iPads. I haven't tried it with mine yet. It's super tiny and super fast:

    it says:
"Best speeds available with included USB Type-C to C cable on USB 3.2 Gen2 supported devices. Use USB Type-A adapter for older devices. USB 3.2 Gen2 2x2 full performance can only be achieved on USB-C host devices."
