Vietnam
Not really music related, although I did bring my iPad, Tx-6 and Op-1 field here to work on music at night.
So this place is unbelievable and super cheap. I was expecting it to be inexpensive, but not as cheap as it is. I’m in Da Nang which is a city by a beautiful beach. My apartment is minutes away from the beach and I only pay about $400 for a really nice apartment including air conditioning and a nice kitchen. You can go out to dinner and spend 2 to 3 dollars and eat like a king. The other day I had a hour long foot massage for under 9 dollars.
The people are super friendly and always saying hello.
I moved out of the USA to Mexico a couple years ago, but you can get way more bang for the buck down here so I think I will be moving here soon.
Right now it’s easy to get a three month visa and then you have to leave for a few days to renew another three visa but that’s fine because you can head over to Thailand or wherever close by.
I highly recommend it for anybody who wants a nice vacation or wants to get out of the country because of the cost of living has gotten so high.

Actually, yesterday I didn’t even leave my apartment I just stayed in and worked on music all day long and had food delivered. I had Pho and a buhn mi sandwich all delivered for 3.95US including tip!!! How can you beat this?
Well that sounds purdy sweet!
What's the language barrier like in Da Nang? I mean obviously I'd learn some Vietnamese to get by before I'd visit. With how reasonably priced everything is plus how friendly the folks are, Vietnam sounds lovely. And by the sound of it, the food is banger.
Hopefully that lasts for you ABF friend. That real estate tycoon who was just sentenced to death cost banks billions in fraud. Maybe not a lot by U.S. standards, but equivalent to 3% of Vietnam’s GDP. Lots of investors were scared off cause of other possible fraudulent businesses engaging in similar practices.
It’s not too bad really. I kind of keep to myself and just swim, eat. And work on music. I do t go out that much at night either. I do a lot of pointing at menus where there is that language barrier.. hahah
I definitely need to learn some Vietnamese.
I didn’t see that but I won’t purchase anything over here and if things get really bad Thailand is only an hour flight away. I actually love Thailand as well. Most likely I’ll go back and forth between countries.
I spent 3 weeks on a motorbike in central and southern Vietnam (Hue, Danang, Hoi An, Dalat, Saigon) 6 years ago and the language barrier was huge, but whoever wants to, will find a way. Hotels and rent companies are OK but make an arrangement in restaurant was a real adventure sometimes I really recommended to print basic things, goods and activities to small cards that you can show so the natives understand what you want them to do. I tried to learn Vietnamese but they have up to 7 pronunciations for one written word and of course with completely different meanings
Anyway, I can confirm everything what @colorsinspace wrote - friendly people, cheap accommodation and (tasty!) food, fantastic wild nature when you leave a town. I still have great memories of this country.
I’ve always wanted to go there. I have a buddy from there and he goes once a year for the summer and really likes it. Another buddy was telling me how cheap that and Thailand are to go to and lots of good night life to enjoy
Nice! How did you find your apartment? Did yoyu have to sign an annual contract or anything?
You can do 2 land border runs per calendar year to Thailand, and as many flight entries as you like, so u may be able to shuttle back and forth between the two. You mentioned having to leave Vietnam for a few days every 3 months. It's not possible to leave and re-enter the same day? Those are the kinds of things that start to get very tedious, in my experience. Regularly doing inter-country visa runs can get expensive too. But certainly it's gonna be a lot more affordable than living in the US, no question about it. Enjoy!
Vietnam is a beautiful country with beautiful people. We spent 2 weeks there this New Years and loved it. We’re definitely going to visit more often and stay longer each time we visit.
Google Translate was our friend and helped us a ton. Da Nang was amazing. We split our time between there and Saigon.
Enjoy your time there @colorsinspace Sounds like you have a pretty sweet setup.
I have been living here for the past 20 years. I am currently in Ho Chi Minh City.
It was a different country when i arrived here. I have been witness to an incredible development over the years.
It is now possible to live a quite comfortable expat life here. Not the very cheapest, unless you live truly local style, but way cheaper than in the west anyway.
Prices in general are going up here too tho, and the country is plagued by massive pollution and traffic problems, rampant korruption, and extreme poverty still exist in some regions.
Also there is no large and vibrant IOS music community here :-)
Language is really hard, it took me years to even speak semi fluently. Translate apps have made it very easy to travel here now.
Local food is awesome and cheap.
My wife and I own a small local noodle restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City, district 7. Restaurant Mi Quang Pho Hoi.
You are very welcome. Of cause we have huge discount for ABF members :-)
