Mozaic Script Advice - Microtonal MPE MIDI filter

I am interested in having a Mozaic script that can convert normal MIDI notes to polyphonic multichannel MPE with microtonal pitch bend applied per note, for retuning MPE compatible synths. The script would map incoming midi notes to a microtonal scale that I could define in the patch in something like Scala format - a simple list of ratios or cent values. Ideally it would be able to handle tunings with more than 12 notes per octave.

  1. Is Mozaic capable of outputting this sort of MPE polyphonic pitchbend data?

  2. How realistic would this project be for someone with fairly limited experience with scripting? This script would be so important for my composing and performance use that I would be willing to put some serious time into it, but I worry that it may be too far beyond the capabilities of a beginner.

I know there's a couple of scripts that do similar things on patch storage, but none of them output MPE.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

  • might this be a prompt to generate a script with ai already?

there's a thread about creating scripts with chatgtp. don't know how good it would work...

I don't think this is something for a beginning scripter, and I doubt whether Mozaic is best tool for this.

FWIW, you might take a look at Pianoteq, which has support for Scala files already, and for MPE. Not sure if you can send midi out from Pianoteq to target other synths, or whether you're limited to Pianoteq voices. The Pianoteq demo is free and fully featured other than (1) having a handful of black keys disabled, and (2) having to close app and restart every 20 minutes. Quick demo of Scala microtonal support is here:

A bunch of plugins exist that have several methods by which synths can be retuned in the way you desire, and they tend to offer MPE as one of the ways of achieving this (ie for use with synths that do support MPE but dont support other ways such as MTS-ESP). And happily at least one of them is available on the ipad, not just normal computers. So save yourself the trouble and Just buy entonal studio instead!

Not a mosaic script, but Entonal Studio for iPad does what you’re looking for if I understand correctly. I was looking for something similar.

The developer @entonal is very passionate about microtonal music and is definitely someone I love to support on his mission.

  • Thanks for the advice everyone! Very helpful to have some direction.

That is an interesting suggestion, I didn't realise it would be anywhere near capable of such a specific task at this point.

That's a good thing to know before delving to far into this, I appreciate the insight. Pianoteq looks great although ideally I would want the flexibility of a midi filter that can tune any MPE capable synth. It's good that it supports retuning though.

Entonal Studio is indeed exactly what I need! I have purchased it and it very accurately performs polyphonic MPE retuning. Unfortunately it crashes constantly when used in Logic for iPad. From what I can find it sounds like it may specifically affect entonal running in logic on apple silicon devices and has been a problem for at least 6 months. Really hoping the developer finds a fix for this as entonal studio would be a perfect solution for microtonal composition.
