Audio through USB-C hub
I just ordered an ipad air 5 M1. It doesn't have a lightning connector so I can't use my Korg Plug Key for an audio interface . Is the headphone output on a usb hub good enough for live perfrormance? I don't record or use backing tracks. I just use ipads as sound modules and set lists.

You could get something like the Soundblaster Play:

Or just use the £9 Apple 3.5mm to USB C adapter with one of these plugged into a hub:
I see no reason why the headphone output wouldn't be good enough for live performance. I guess it would depend on what you're outputting to. If it accepts only mono input, then that could be an issue and there could be impedance issues too maybe?
There's no headphone jack, so see above, or, some hubs have a headphone jack.
I was considering a hub with usb3 slots for external drive or thumb drive. I also would like it to supply power to the ipad. I got the 64 Gb version. Most of my apps are physically modeled so I don't use a lot of ram, but I was thinking of getting Pure Synth Platinum or AudioLayer so I could stream from an external drive. I do have an m-audio interface but I was thinking if I got a hub with audio out I wouldn't need to bring it. I'm outputting to a mixer that sends to la larger mixer.
Does the mixer accept stereo input?
Yes, but I have been running in mono
If you try to run a stereo output into a mono input you may get unexpected results regardless of whether the music is in mono or stereo.
I think its a mono signal. Its summed to mono in AUM before I send it out.
Or you could get
https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/MUQX3ZM/A/usb-c-to-lightning-adapter?fnode=65b3c6264fd34e5d9b5bf61a1444f2d53be9e5b6ebb4efffcd73fc860dd4430a45434c33978e0a3e6d4f0513c15006a8454353effeaff0e69ede31f835c396476d076c0b8ce5417c5a5e4bb8f4d161e62d058352e10b8b821cdadb9e67ed8653
And carry on using the plug key
That isn’t what I’m talking about. A mono jack is different than a stereo jack. The headphone out has a jack with three electrical wires and connectors, called rings. These are “tip” (left), “ring” (right), and “sleeve” (common ground). A mono jack has only tip and sleeve. If you plug a stereo cable into a mono jack, you may get unexpected results.
@musicplayer do you know if the mono input of the mixer is balanced ?
I have an Apple usb-C dongle and it does sound better than 3rd part dongle. I guess those larger ones like the sound blaster one with amplification offer more volume than Apple dongle, can someone confirm that?
It depends. On my old 10.5 (2017) model the Drangonfly was louder than the Apple Lightning dongle, but on the m1 Pro with the USB C dongle that's not the case. I'm guessing the newer dongle is a bit louder.
I think Apple dongle only has DAC and don’t have amplification. I only comparing it to other cable-size dongle.
I've no idea on the interals of the dongle, but it can comfortably drive Sennheiser HD650s, to more or less the same volume as a Dragonfly Red.
The output of the first mixer is balanced. My set up is a little unusual. I use two ipads. Ipad #1 is mostly for pianos and a set list app that I use for lyrics and to send program changes. It also sends a click for a few seconds to the drummer so I don't have to think about tempos. The pianos are panned to one side and the click to the other side. I have a cable plugged into the headphone out of the ipad that splits into two ts cables into mono inputs in the first mixer. That mixer sends two balanced cables to the FOH mixer. It gets midi from bluetooth plugged into the Nord. Ipad #2 is just for horn parts and uses the Korg Plug Key for midi and as an audio interface. I have been using an Ipad 8 and ipad 9. It works ok with them, but I couldn't resist the price for a new ipad air 5th gen. I haven't figured out how to best incorporate it yet. If I use a usb c to lightning adapter will I lose any funtionality? Sorry for the long post and thanks for the suggestions.
