Best equivalent to virus on ios?
Hey! Been reaaaly loving Ostirus emulation on mac.
What would be the best similar complex synth on ios?
Lots of filter types, morphable wavetables, fx, "vintage modes" for detune and randomisation, etc. Maybe even some ios synth emulates some "real life" chip aswell?
Ive been eyeing Woodsynth and I have Magellan 2, but since there are quite a lot on the market, a little guidance would be appreciated
Comments
Butter Synth, Synthmaker, Tera Pro .. other synths arr much much behind in terms of posibilies and sound quality.. but Virus has VERY speciffic rich sound so even those are "kinda in that direction" but not replacement, not same league...
Those late 90's / early '00s synths like Virus, Nord Lead 1,2,3, Novation Supernova, Waldorf Q, Waldorf XT, JP8080 are true monsters, shiwcases of absolute peak of coding skills - extremely distinctive original sound, hardly possible to replace with anything on desktop, not just on iOS .. on iOS i am not even expecting we will ever see something like that ... like clone any of them ...
For JP8080 is there Sunrizer which goes a kinda in that direction, but it is lacking few major features of 8080 which is a pity.. Other than that, nothing in this eara of HW VA league 😢
Well.. the emulation is quite on point i think..
Well OSTirus ins not actualy emulation, it is THE thing.. its's 1:1 same unchanged code which runs on HW chip.. .. they emulated only chip itself, it's instruction stet, but the synths it runs are just running same code lime on HW
Woukd be fantastic to have this DSP56300 chip emulator on iOS but not having much hopes...
Yes it would be wonderful.. id be happily willing to pay for it aswell, if that needs to be the motivation..
I mention the Nord Lead. We have the Nerd lead which sounds great
Lol no... Honestly, that thing has nothing to do with real Nord Lead 1,2,3,4 serie in any thinkabke way - workflow, possibilities and the sound in first place. I know that it contains sampled oscillators from Nord Lead A1 (which is very different from 1,2,3,4), but there similiarity ends. Sound of filters, quality of ringmod and FM mod implementatiin , envelopes and LFOs imolementstion,. .. nothing. This is definitely not in any form substitute for NL classics. It has no that sound.
To be clear - i am not saying it is bad synth - definitely useable for some people, it’s nice looking, it’s cheap - affordable. It has lot of presets. Great for beginners. Standard AudIoKit synth like other ones. Not for me but wouldn’t say it’s bad. It’s ok. But it’s not NL in any remote way.
Let’s talk about desktop plugins DSP Discovery or Synth1 (not same as AK Synth One) - they are solid emulations, probably 80% close to real thing ..
I never had the privilege of playing a real Nord Lead. Maybe one day.
Performance wise it would run on modern iPads. Not sure Apple would allow but they have started to allow game emulators so you never know.
Yeah retroarch for example.
I just ordered an m2 ipad. Ostirus is working great on my m1 mac air, so there shouldn't be any issues
My list right now:
Nlog synth pro
Woodsynth
Tera pro
Buttersynth
Any more to check out?
in my opinion Nord Lead 2 is absolutely best HW synth made in late 90’s / early 00’s .. if you fet opportunity, just grab one .. it’s sound is brutal …
the Synthmaster synths (1 and 2) give you a lot of ways to customise your sound that can get somewhat in virus territory
I own the red virus classic, an absolute beast that i love dearly but find myself using less and less. Listening to goa/psy in my youth i always knew i wanted a virus, and it served me well for years, even gigged with it and a machinedrum for awhile. I really ought to dust mine off and pair it with the octatrack for some old school fun
Also someone mentioned sunrizer which is also a great synth, not exactly virus like (no wavetables) but the vintage hardware spirit is strong in sunrizer
Edit: yes Demdy put it well, these other options put you in the right direction while not replicating the virus exactly. But still, your list and other suggestions are all very capable and great-sounding ios synths that you’ll surely enjoy
For synths with very able sound sculpturing tools also check out Factory, Aparillo and Nambu. Also love WoodSynth and Tera Pro. Nlog Pro sounds great imo, but I don’t like the layout for programming. Still haven’t bought Buttersynth yet.
As for replicating the Virus, I wouldn’t have a clue as never used one. I nearly bought one years back, but ended up with an Andromeda instead and still miss that synth.
Had a Virus B and nothing on ios is going to sound 'exactly' like a Virus. Having said that, I'll toss Poison-202 by Jim Audio into the list, Twin 3 by FabFilter and either SynthMaster by KV331.
A little trick I've tried in the past is running a "supersaw" sound through HildaFX. The colourisation alone somehow makes the signal sound like hardware, at least to my own ears.
Poison 202 is an OG AU synth.
