CPU spikes and crackling in Logic
Don’t you guys experience higher CPU load in LP 2.0? (compared to 1.x)
For a few days I face some crackles while the CPU meter goes red in my projects even when I have only 3 tracks: 2 alchemy synths and 1 studio bass.
If I just create a new blank project without any instruments added, the CPU meter shows ~15-20% load.
I didn’t change the audio buffer size, it’s set to 256.
What’s wrong here?
Already restarted the iPad and finally deleted and reinstalled Logic, but it haven’t fixed the issue.

Have any external hardware connected to the iPad?
Actually I face this issue with or without hardware connected.
Have you fully rebooted?
Yes. Furthermore I updated to 17.5.1 from 17.5, which didn’t help either.
The same for me.
iPad Pro M1 2TB 16GB RAM
Very peculiar. I also had a small project (50 sec) including 3 tracks with Session Player.
There was a 'CPU overload' message in between. And that with the highly praised M1 processor!
Did Apple include something in the last LP update to make us upgrade to M4?
'Tinfoil Hat On'. Apple slapped the 'ChromaGlow' on a bunch of the presets used by the session players and it's a CPU HOG
Thanks Samu. I'll keep that in mind.
Same for me. I have only one track loaded (m1) and it doesn’t crackle but it does spike into red for no reason randomly. No processsing or Input, just moving through the UI I’ve seen it jump.
Now I was told DSP is not very accurate with the meters but if it’s others with crackling it might be going on for people with a lot in their projects.
(For reference BM3 spikes and crackles with too many AUv3 and hardware but Cubasis on the other hand has never ever crackled on me, and it never spikes…so maybe Logic just needs an update for some stability)
(Could be the AI, chromaglow, and also someone did ask why the audio sounds processed when recording versus other daws and I think maybe sometimes if you don’t know it, you are getting a preset loaded into your track, so make sure none of that is enabled without your choice)
I kinda noticed that too and im also on a 2020 iPad Pro so after 3 players it's a wrap lol. I probably won't renew my yearly subscription, not that Logic Pro for iPad isn't good but I honestly dont use it as much as I thought I would and my iPads feel old as hell when I use it now lol, plus I have the desktop version running smoothly on my M3 Max
Ok, thanks. I‘m on M2 pro but i gonna wait a lil longer til updating. I‘m in the middle of a few projects and i absolutely don‘t want to deal with stuff like this. I experienced it too often in ios over the years as well.
As @Samu hinted at it's pretty common to think there's engineered obsolescence within the Apple ecosystem. For me the incredible speed of time passing, at least how I perceive it, can color my opinions for sure. I mean as a kid those last few weeks of school before summer break seemed like an eternity. Now, staring down 50, I feel time just races by; like I can't believe it's nearly June already...
Sorry to ramble but issues like @GLacey is having naturally make us question if our kit is "good enough" to run full sessions in Cubasis and Logic. I mean I absolutely got that FOMO feeling looking at the new iPads. My main iPad is a Air 5 with the M1 chip that I got the week it came out. All the reviews put over how powerful the M1 chip was and I felt like I future proofed myself. 2 years whiz by and now there's the new Pro with an M4(!) and the new Air 6 has an M2.
So there's always going to be a "bigger and better" but you'd like to think that the iPads Apple said were the fastest ever, longest battery, yadda, yadda, etc. just a year or two ago don't start running like a broken Etch-A-Sketch...
I was struggling with this too, but I think I've found the reason/solution: I've noticed that if you have a session player in the project and you edit any session region or any associated region in any way, then you'll see a little spinning wheel on the top right next to the undo button while the CPU recalculates/regenerates the session player. If you try playing while that wheel is still spinning then the CPU will peg out in the red. If you wait for that wheel to finish before playback then you are usually fine.
Weird
I’m not hitting even 25% on desktop but it said it maxed out and stopped
On iPad I’m hitting 35% max and it isn’t crackling, just a random spike
But now things are much smoother for some reason
All I know is I think I’ll hold off on any more updates to keep optimization for the m1 (iPad and desktop)
