Using Yamaha Montage into iOS - Cubase or Logic Pro?

I really want to give Logic Pro a go on the iPad, but I am thinking that perhaps the integration of the Yamaha Montage may be better with Cubase as, well, Yamaha own it too.

Or should it not make much of a difference which iOS DAW I use?

Usage will be for creating tracks and songs, setup recall to the Montage and live gigs.

That's rather a question of which DAW you prefer, both would work for sure.
Logic Pro comes with a larger sound library and more advanced functions but Cubasis has all common instruments covered too.

What exactly do you expect from setup recall?

  • Do you mean Cubasis?
If so, it has much better midi controller integration than Logic on iPad - as Logic has next to none…
The Montage can be a great controller, but you may need to do a fair bit of manual reading (or YouTube watching) to get your head around it as it is not the most intuitive… IMHO…

essentially recall whatever is setup in Logic, so it then recalls the performance saved in the Montage.

Yeah sorry, Cubasis. Yeah the controller angle was what I was thinking of...I thought I'd read that this new Logic 2.0 for iOS was supposed to be better. Might have misunderstood haha, nothing new there!!

How can the iPad sequencer recall the performance on the Montage?

It looks like MIDI program changes are supported but not bank selects.
It might work with a limited set of live performances.

  • everything on a montage can be recalled via CC0, CC32 and PC commands ;) - that article is about selecting MODES on the montage via a System Exclusive message. As Clendennin writes there are several ways to operate Live Set selections. IN my case I am talking about Performance mode, which is the one that a user would be in when using Logic. Live Sets are simply a convenient marker for required performances on a gig, that would not be required if using Logic Live which would recall the performance linked rather than a Live Set slot.

    Are you talking about Logic?

@pax-eterna No, Cubasis. You can place a MIDI clip sending PC and CC messages anywhere in your arrangement.
Logic Pro can certainly do it too, it's just that I'm not a subscription guy.
