A non-crashy PDF reader?
I have a bunch of fairly large books in PDF format, 100s of pages long, and the built-in Apple PDF reading is… fairly crashy! Annoyingly so. (These are fake books, method books, etc)
Do any of you have recommendations for a more reliable PDF reader?
Comments
I love pdf expert. Have owned it for over 10 years. It is frequently updated, syncs with multiple cloud services and is pretty crash free. I use the free version which doesn’t allow you to edit pdf as well as many more extensive abilities, but I just use it as a library for reading mine.
I think at one point I did purchase a lifetime membership so not sure what functionality you now get for free but pretty sure you can read and store .pdf in it.
GoodReader
+1. of course!
I should add that I certainly want a reader to be able to view files stored in a non-app folder of On My iPad.
Another vote for PDF Expert. Been using it for years. Holds all my manuals and books. Literally 100’s (1000’s???). I’ve never had an issue with it.
Another vote for GoodReader.
Looks like I’ll be checking out these 2 options, thank you all!
I've found Readdle Documents to be the most stable pdf reader with excellent browsing through pages and a very good search function that shows search results in context.
same here
Just load your PDFs into Apple’s own “Books” app. You just want to read PDFs, not edit them, right? Books app is great for this. And you already own it.
There are configuration options in the Books app. They're in the lower right-hand corner and tapping on the lower right of the screen exposes them (the symbol looks like two horizontal lines on top of 3 dots).
There are different themes for type of "paper" you read on, there are options for changing the size of the text, from very small to extremely large and you also have the option to read pages side-by-side or one page at a time. And you have the option to "slide", "curl" or have no effect for advancing to the next or previous page.
And your reading is synchronized across your iPhone, iPad and desktop.
You should look again. The Books app is one of the best out there for reading.
Good luck if you're out where there's no internet connection. I stopped using Books after a couple of camping trips with nothing to read because Apple decided I no longer wanted my books stored locally. The second time I even specifically downloaded before leaving but still lost access to some books and documents.
I've been using Kindle App since then.
Sounds like you may have forgotten to download your books before you went camping?

And another instructional:

I suppose if you have your iPad set to automatically offload apps which aren't being used, that also might account for it.
I specifically said that I downloaded them on the 2nd trip but some were flushed to the cloud anyway.
I'm not sure why you're so intent on recommending the books app here, especially since the OP specifically mentioned that they're looking for an alternative to that app due to crashiness that they experienced.
(fwiw, I've never seen any instability. I like how the app works except for not having control over local storage. And I do use it for manuals, etc, for general reference. It's nice how it syncs across devices without hassle.)
I don't have automatic offload enabled.
Thanks for trying to help though.
For printed (PDFed) Music use forScore.
The original post did not mention the "Books" app. It specifically said "...the built-in Apple PDF reading..."
Opening a PDF on iOS and iPadOS by default is opened and viewed through the "Files" app, not Books.
Thanks for that clarification. I misread.
It's possible the OP meant to say "Books", but they did not.
It is Files that has been unstable @NeuM , however Books is also a total no due to how it loves to delete files from local storage @wim . And I further would prefer files not to be in the storage of a specific app, or at the least still accessible from files.
Being a jazz player I’m using Calypso Score for the fake book management, I went with that due to being able to demo it which wasn’t possible for iGigBook - Calypso worked fine so chosen, both are ~20 currency units so not “cheap cheap” to try every option. If I didn’t need that functionality I’d likely have gone with forScore. (But this is another thread!)
Goodreader, as mentioned. And for sheet music, forscore. Although if igigbook still exists it automatically catalogs those fakebook pdf’s (or did at one time).
Also vote for PDF expert. It is one of my most used apps for work.
I bought it way back so i have pretty good funtionality.
I don’t subscribe allthough the sub-features are super cool
Thank you @tja this one is just the kind of minimalist interface, well integrated with Files, which I was looking for!
The Books app does exactly what it needs to do for my purposes. And saving my PDFs in the cloud, instead of on my devices frees up space. I prefer that.
And... yes, it used to be called the iBooks Store. And there is an authoring app still available called "iBooks Author" which is quite good, so anyone can layout and create their own "e-book" for sale on the Books app store. I've used it for some testing, but I have not written any books.
