mini Koala midi controller
i am a huge fan of Koala sampler. So much so; when I came across a capacitive touch pad, I immediately thought it would make a cool midi controller. I took me a weekend to design, 3d print laser cut and wire and program to work as a universal midi controller. but man it is fun to play. and small enough to take on the go.
next up, a battery powered bluetooth version.
if anybody knows any of the guys that make koala. send me their info. i’d love to share it with them too.

Looks cool
Nice work
thanks
Very nice. Perhaps Add some bank or octave buttons.
A shift button. A endlesss encoder. Assuming Koala will support relative midi or cc feedback when switching pads.
Lots of possible upgrades here.
oh i like the idea of octave buttons!! what could an endless encoder do? i have one of those. just not sure how i would implement it.
What did you use for the pads on that controller?
the pads are a touch capacitive keypad.

Sweet! Thanks.
cool thanks
no problem
Oooo that's awesome! I've had a dream of a small koala controller
Was looking at the Offgrid for a minute, but just took expensive (for my wallet)
Got an SMC Pad and it works well in the meantime, but man, would love a more portable style!
Great work!
FYI, you can connect any standard Bluetooth numpad to Drambo and host Koala there, or just use Drambo to convert keystrokes to MIDI messages.
Now I’m looking for such numpad for iPhone Drambo usage, any recommendation?
(Best would be if no click action - for use with acoustic instrument- silent working)
?
I have just used one that I've got from someone about to throw it into in the junk bin one day...
Make sure you get a real Bluetooth model, not the wireless RF ones with a USB stick included!
Most of them don't click anyway. I have a fairly flat model from Logitech.
Edit: This one from Rytaki should do the trick:
Note that the special buttons (here, the calculator button) usually send sequences of key strokes and can't be used in 1:1 mapping.
They might be used as a Macro tool though, hitting multiple buttons in a sequence.
Edit 2: Found one with a knob! No idea what it does though.
And another one, unfortunately no Bluetooth so a little Raspberry would be needed to convert to BT:
Yeah! Thanks.
Now I’m experimenting with regular wireless keyboard (via USB dongle) to check how Drambo mapping works. I see option „piano on keyboard” must be enabled. Anyway - thank you, I really needed this info/inspiration.
I was considering new noise NM2 controller, but the price and size of buttons seems for me not really what I’m looking for.
Great!
Indeed, mapping pads is a good idea because they have different modes (track, scene, pattern selection) and the modes can be switched via remote too.
BTW, I just found this repo of examples that seem to indicate that a USB keyboard to Bluetooth keyboard converter should even be possible with a small Raspberry Pico W:
https://github.com/raspberrypi/pico-examples/blob/master/README.md
This is the way : https://unwn.dev/shop/midi-controllers/topo-t16/
The roli block could work well with koala. I have both but haven’t used koala in a long time. I think i used it with it though.
no need for a keypad to midi
conversion. this already sends out midi notes on each pad. and midi cc on the knob. it’s universal usb midi. i just plug in and it shows up in the midi sources.
i would just want to run this code on a bluetooth arduino board and use it wirelessly. I have an esp32 arduino board. i just have to set it up.
this is interesting though. i might have to try that
‘Full access from Keyboard” should be disabled in Accesibility to map keyboard under Drambo.
And I found this at Mouser https://www.adafruit.com/product/3601
WHAT. Buying. Bought. Thank you. Also, that site seems cool. They tuts and kit for learning electronics, which I been wanting to get into some DIY stuff
Also, thank you @rs2000 mentioned:
Finally, my first controller for Drambo ❤️, all for the cost of an app. BTW, is there a limit on how many BT devices can be available as a controller?
Also, does it matter if already using BT for audio?
Thanks for sharing your cool project and starting this thread @eross
A laser CNC laser cutter at home??
I have that exact same model. Good luck with yours.
Mine broke after 2 uses, now it won't charge/connect anymore. the charging LED is flashing while charging and that's it.
I wouldn't recommend it, also because the rubber keys are quite fiddly and less fun to use than the touchscreen.
I don't think so. Got an apple BT keyboard and a BT headset connected and usable simultaneously
I also bought in the cost 9€ with shipping, but in my usage (acoustic instrument) silent working rubber small keys are an plus (positive). Ok maybe it will brak too fast, but experience will be taken, and lesson.
I play melodion, and to control Drambo I have a few options: foot controller, controller attached to left elbow, or in left hand (which is keeping meloduon). So size is important, price at this stage (experiments) also. After , I can decide if noise NM2 or other solution (Music Kraken, of DIY controller…). Nice to share ideas, and get warning about quality.
Good luck @szczyp, the size is great without doubt
This seems like the right place to repost my custom koala keyboard.
I love it. I especially like how the keyboard works with banks in koala, controlling whatever scenes or pads are currently on screen. MIDI doesn’t do that.
This also means you can only really use it in standalone, not with Koala hosted as an audio unit.
that’s pretty cool
Sounds on par with the amount of uses all of my other $10 apps have received 😃
Haha, it looks like perfectly fit for the purpose then 😋
@mistercharlie Good to know, thanks! Now painting colored frames around key groups on my BT ASCII keyboard and giving it a go with Koala.
@mistercharlie
Very aesthetically pleasing, the skin colors and keypad color matching.
I’m being earnest when I say that this comment really helped me to think.
The other day I was about to retort that I’m an iPhone user, SE at that. Also it’s gotta be BT controller, cause my lightening port barely functions despite cleaning and trying different cables. Your comment reminded me of my obsolete iPad mini 2 and the fact that I’ve been sleeping on exploring Loopy Pro to build surfaces to control external stuff. I was surprised to learn @michael still is supporting old ioses and delighted to see midi note/channel/whatever, per pad, ect.
I was up to 4 in the am quickly built something fun to control the 4 breaks patch on my phone from iPad. Complete with fx triggers ❤️ thank you again for what seemed to you probably a passing comment
