Mela 5.4 Update — Noise Gate, Module Updates

Hey all, just letting you all know about the Mela 5.4 update. As always, feel free to ask follow-up questions. All Module Collections are 30% off until June 2.

The Mela 5.4 update introduces a fully featured noise gate as a new Mela Lab module. It includes all the standard parameters: Threshold, Hysteresis, Reduction, Attack, Hold, and Release. The Macro Button module has graduated from the Mela Lab and can now be found under the Modulators category.

The new version also brings additional features to existing modules. For example, the VA Oscillator and Simple LFO have new waveforms, and the Random module now includes the Smooth parameter for smoothing out modulation.

Mela 5.4

There’s also a new Mela preset pack to explore: Samu Vol. 2. @Samu continues to influence Mela’s direction by bringing his experience as an artist with a technical mind. He is always the first to test drive new Mela features and modules, integrating them into his ever-evolving presets. Check out the demo track he created, using only his custom presets. The preset pack will continue to be updated with each new version of Mela. Be sure to check the Artist Presets page regularly.

Mela 5.4 Changelog

Noise Gate Module:

  • Added a fully featured noise gate module with a gain reduction meter.
  • It provides the following parameters: Threshold, Hysteresis, Reduction, Attack, Hold and Release.
  • Noise Gate is a Mela Lab module and part of Collection 3.

Module Updates:

  • Added the Parabolic Sine waveform to the VA Oscillator module.
  • Added the Cycles parameter to the Random module. Set its value to 1 for one-shot behaviour.
  • Added the Smooth parameter to the Random module. It defines the time constant for smoothing out the random modulation signal.
  • For consistency, the Smoothing parameter has been renamed to Smooth in the following modules: Macro Button, MIDI Source and Stereo Delay.
  • Added the Step waveform to the Simple LFO module. It's a unipolar version of the Square waveform.
  • Macro Button's Smooth parameter's maximum value changed to 1 second from 100ms.
  • Macro Button has graduated from the Mela Lab and can be found under the Modulators category.
  • The MIDI Source's UI is now slightly more compact.

Other Changes:

  • Moved the Mela Lab button to the right to improve the toolbar layout.
  • Added new presets.
  • Various internal improvements.

Grab Mela from the App Store.

  • The link to Samu Vol.1 on the ArtistPresets page throws a 404 error. It is missing the .zip at the end.

This seems to be the correct one: https://nikolozi.com/mela/artist-presets/modern/SamuVol1.zip

Thanks for spotting that. I fixed it.

  • does this version of mela also work as effects only, the same way mela 3 fx did. or does everything run into and out of the full app?

Mela can run as any of the 3 main plug-in types: instrument, audio effect and midi effect. And all modules are available in all cases.

Money and time well spent. This is a suite of fx and modulators that find their way into most of all of my projects. It’s like having a nicely filled toolbox with tools for almost every job!

Obviously, I'm biased, but when I'm working on music I no longer go through plug-ins trying to figure out which one I need for the current task. I just load up Mela and quickly create a custom preset.

i do have a question. i’m loving the app so far. but i’m trying to setup the audio-to-mod module. in order to feed it audio, how do i route the audio in from another app. Do i setup another version of Mela5 in an audio fx slot. ( I am in AUM). and also run it in that way? I’m trying to use audio from another app, to make a filter cutoff open up when audio comes in

    • Instead of the Audio-to-Mod module you probably want the Envelope Follower module.
    • Audio-to-Mod if for audio rate modulations, it allows you to do FM and AM style modulations.
    • You can use the Envelope Follower to get the level of the incoming audio and then use it to drive a filter cutoff.
    • In Mela, the main input is called Audio In 1 and side-chain Audio In 2.
    • Currently, the side-chain input (i.e. Audio In 2) is supported when Mela is used as an effect. But since you are using AUM it doesn't make much difference.
    • But I do plan to have Audio In 2 working when Mela is inserted as an instrument. And later on have multi-in/out audio done.
    • So, you want to use Audio In 2 to drive the Envelope Follower.

I've created a short demo video I think it does what you want:

    • I have a random drum loop on channel 1 in AUM.
    • On AUM channel 2 I inserted Mela as an effect.
    • I created a super simple instrument with an Oscillator and Amp Envelope on Lane 1 in Mela. Then appended the VA Filter module.
    • On Lane 2, I inserted Envelope Follower with Audio In 2 and disabled its output as we don't need to hear the drums on AUM channel 2.
    • I also inserted a Volume module to boost input gain.
    • Adjusted Envelope Follower parameters to test.
    • Finally, wired up the EF to modulate the cutoff.

Hope it makes sense. Let me know if something is not clear.

  • @Nikolozi AU parameters don’t work correctly inside Drambo, but they do in AUM. Should I just let the Drambo dev know?

    Yes, please report to him.

Mela dynamically updates its parameter tree depending on the modules loaded in the preset. And some hosts don’t observe these changes. The main reason is that most plug-ins have static parameter trees and some DAW devs aren't even aware that plug-ins might update their parameter trees.

Btw I emailed the Drambo developer a while ago and he confirmed the issue with me. I’m certain he was planning to implement it but he hasn’t released an update in a while. So, not sure if he has fixed it yet internally. It would be good if he gets reports from the users as well, so he can prioritise it accordingly.

Thanks for the details! I figured that Mela’s dynamic structure had something to do with it, I’ll get in touch with him.

that is perfect! i definitely is what i am looking to do. also thanks for the video that helped a ton. thanks for taking the time to do that!

Just curious: Any reason for using Mela 5 when you have Drambo already?
It seems to me that automation and p-locking is much more straightforward natively.

No particular reason, I tend to try out anything modular, and I liked NFM from way back. Mela has pushed me, I suppose because of its design, to things that I hadn’t tried with Drambo.

Considering my eyes are getting seriously f’ked up I prefer the larger UI elements in Mela 5 over Drambo’s microscopic approach, there’s a valid reason why I’ve been requesting options to zoom the UI for the past two years in the beta-threads…

  • @Samu : Good point about Drambo eyestrain

  • also Mela is so fast to route audio and midi in and
    out. even faster than drambo.
