Best drum kits for Patterning ....
I'm curious what is /are your favorite Patterning drum kit(s)? I'm looking for a percussive kind of feel, maybe African or tribal percussive. Cheers
Comments
My favourites are the ones that contain "sounds", as opposed to "hits". ( I realise that hits are also sounds folks...no need to write in and point that out)
Forrest, ShnthDrum, ShnthString, The Flow - these are the ones I'm drawn to.
I don't make "beats', in the conventional sense, but when I take the bpm down to 30 or 40, and load up P3 with samples, mess with the "auto rotation" feature, I get some wonderful overlapping, collage type stuff. So P3 is more of a flexible sample-player than a drum machine/sequencer for me.
I really hope there will be more kits with less conventional sounds, field recordings etc.
Can anyone contribute to the kit depository @benkamen ?
You can: Go to the drum kits page, tap on the three line “hamburger” menu of the “Current Drumkit” section. The export functionality includes the option to upload your kit to the cloud.
I’m looking forward to your drum kits.
Great! Likewise, look forward to hearing what you and other folks upload
And presumably, uploading a kit means you offer those sounds for anyone to use in any way?
You will already find my first drumkit in that cloud. It's "The Wee O3", sounds of an emulated Korg Minipops (Remember JMJs Oxygene ?).
Oh cool! I definitely do remember Oxygene. That and Rendezvous blew my 13 year old mind, and were my introduction to synths/electronic music ( if you don’t count all the 80s pop I was loving at that time; Nick kershaw, Tears for Fears, FGTH etc)
Yes - there’s a EULA to agree to - to make sure you’re not sharing copyrighted material and to agree to let others use your sounds. They can’t re-distribute them (eg in a sample pack) , but can use them in music without restriction.
Please let me know if you upload something!
Cool. Yes, will do!
So @benkamen , to clarify - if I make a kit from software on my laptop, let's say I use sounds from a Slate & Ash instrument, or an Arturia Analog Lab synth, is that permissable? I mean, that's no different from using those sounds to make an album right?
You will need to consult their EULA If it's a synth, it should be fine. If it's a sample library, the answer is probably that it's not fine.
Ok cool. Thanks Ben. One more question- let’s say I import 8 wav files into P3. Then I edit them, adjust attack time, change the pitch etc - what gets exported as my kit? Just the original wavs or those sounds modified? @benkamen
The whole samples will be included - but so will all the parameters, attack etc. you can crop the samples in app using the dropdown menu in the sample editor above the sample library.
@benkamen is there a way to create "MIDI drumkits" ? For example have the MIDI mapping of a particular hardware or software drum machine saved as a kit that can be loaded into the patterns.
I have always thought about using Patterning as a kind of synth sequencer, but never tried it. It might be interesting to load some square waves, pads or sinewaves in the machine.
Not sure you understood my question -
So if I import 8 of my own files, and then crop them , then the kit I export will appear in the drumcloud as the edited files? But amendments that I make like attack/hold/pitch won’t be saved? Is that right?
The settings will be saved. The attack etc is a non-destructive edit. It doesn’t modify the sample itself . You can try it for yourself. Create a kit and export it to your device. Create a new project and choose the kit you exported?
Ok cool. That's what I wanted to know. Thanks @espiegel123
Didn't want to upload it until I knew the answer to this, because I didn't want anyone downloading a kit that wasn't anything like I wanted it to be!
Oh, you mean export it to my ipad before I upload to the cloud thingy?
yes, I'll try and figure that out....although anything at all to do with file management on the ipad just makes me run in the opposite direction. I really, really hate it
Yes, you can export your kits locally and test them out before uploading.
