How Do You Handle the Insufferable Longtime Users?

I consider myself a lurker and participant on this forum. It's my favorite place on the internet. But I've noticed that some longtime users are insufferable. My question isn't whether anyone agrees with me, given the number of comments and posts about this, it's clear many do, but how do most of you cool and amazing people deal with it? It's exhausting to see some people called out right away for their little BS while others get away with pedantic behavior and big old BS. Please don't ban me, I love this place! Hahaha

  • I don’t care for some of the personalities here. Not enough to actively express dislike, more just wanting to avoid certain kinds of responses. And… I may just be a bit burned out on it really. That said, I still like this place - it’s a terrific resource for iOS music. The only place, really.

  • Don’t feed the trolls. Let it go. This is an important life skill in general, but it is vital for surviving the internet.

  • I love this place a lot, as it's my main audience for all my crazy musical shenanigans, but at the same time, there are a couple longstanding pains in the rear. My advice is simply to put them on "ignore" so they can't DM you and continue making great music. 😉

    You guys are right. Live and let live I guess lol. Peace to y’all!!!!

  • I've been using the iPad for music production exclusively in my home studio since early 2015, and have been a member here just as long.

    I try to visit the forum at least a few times a week and usually get to check in everyday. I know there are controversial threads that pop up occasionally but for the most part the forum membership, both old & new, are cool people.

    Maybe my view is skewed considering I've been a member of dozens music forums and this place is Disneyland compared to some forums out there. The Les Paul Forum, the old GearSlutz forum and the DUC Avid forum can be brutal and those are just off the top of my head.

    This is THE defacto iOS music production forum. Michael from Audiobus has been very cool to let the forum grow into what it is, a representation of everything iOS music. This was a forum for the Audiobus app, which with AUv3's and AUM, etc isn't really used too much anymore.

    If @magnusovi is coming from a "boomers...sigh" angle it's pretty shortsighted. I don't see any "in my day" lectures going down here. If some people have been dicks to @magnusovi I'd say just try to disengage and let them flame out. Trolls & forum snarks get to be pretty ineffective and eventually MIA when you don't feed into the negativity.

    DubstepForum.co.uk, I was virtually ganged up on by a bunch of bloodthirsty billy no mates wankers, all because I asked a simple basic question about making basses like Excision. They all thought I was a troll, where I saw nothing in the forum rules about refraining from asking that question. This was back in 2010 before Brostep blew up in the US. Everyone there had an elitist attitude towards Brostep, pining for the "days of yore" when "Dubstep was good" (i.e. og 2005 Dubstep, which at the time I asked the question, was only a mere five years prior).

    Believe me, I agree with you. This place IS Disneyland compared to those other hellholes. Well, even Disneyland can sometimes have a pedantic karen here or there, but over here in the ABF it's mostly snide micro aggressions, not outright hostile attacks.

    (Although last week someone I had on "ignore" somehow managed to sneak through in my DMs to "tell me what for" about responding to spam threads, and I promptly told him to f off out of my messages. 😂 )

  • I just go for a long swim when life gets in the way! Then again I’m living in Vietnam/Thailand these days and I’m retired so I have hardly any stress. Keep working kids! You need to put in your dues…That being said, I think I’ll go for a nice foot massage cause it’s a cloudy day..

    Sounds great. :) And you bet your ass I'll keep on working on music. My goal is to have a new album uploaded to SoundCloud by the end of June.

    I get it, you love this forum, I do too.

  • Not sure I see it that way. I think I'm one of the more annoying people here, although it's sporadic, and I not a long time member.

    For the record, you've always come off as a decent person to me. :) But, as I told @magnusovi , just block and go forward.

    💯 I didn’t understand the concept of “blocking” as a way to shield yourself from negativity until today. I always thought of the online world as a space for free speech and all that, but life is too short, at least for me. So, I’ll start blocking annoying people. Thanks, JWM, for the suggestion.

    Omg, ever since I sold my Op-1 Field, folks have been asking me if I'm going to continue using that. 😅😮‍💨 I sold it to make some ends meet and to get a couple Bleass plugins I was missing.

    Yeah, I have felt your pain lol. I personally don't find blocking works because you still see they messaged you, you can click on it to reveal the words, and you'll still see what they wrote and their name if anyone else quotes them. I tend to either just decide not to engage with certain people, or if something really bothers me and I feel I need to address it, I either do so in the thread or by DM.

    I usually block people so I am reminded not to bother with them. Putting them on ignore also prevents them from DMing (for the most part, although one user still managed to sneak into my DMs, to which I kindly told him to f off. 🤣 )

    Hope you're well Gav.

    How can categorize my response as anything but civil and supportive? You start a thread that's incredibly vague aside from saying the longtime membership here is "insufferable". No examples or details just this generalisation that:

    "It's exhausting to see some people called out right away for their little BS while others get away with pedantic behavior and big old BS."

    I tried to be reasonable and explain that compared to other forums the AudioBus forum is extremely friendly and helpful. I'm not defending anyone who has been a dick to you, I was trying, as a long-time member here, to be supportive and remind you that those who set out to troll or be combative do so to get a response. If you don't feed into it they eventually move on, most times rather quickly.

    Instead you chose to throw gas on the fire by making some declarative post that everyone who has been a member for longer than you have are insufferable wonks. So who's really dealing in BS here?

    P.S. I don't think you know what pedantic really means...

  • Kind of lame without dropping some names:

    @NeuM
    Attached an AI generated song to a post a couple of months ago, I gave props and mentioned that remixing AI songs could be cool idea. In my reply I've attached the stems of that song.

    Next morning after checking the forum I saw that his original post and my reply with the stems were deleted, with the help of a mod or the admin. Never got a reply about what happened. Is it unpolite to reupload the stems of a song uploaded for everyone to download? Don't I deserve a reply?

    @NoncompliantBryant
    Called me a xenophobe or worse after I've mentioned that I boycott Chinese brands. I already forgot about it and tried to interact with him since, but this post reminded me of that: https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/comment/1327159/#Comment_1327159

    As a person of law you should be better than that. Not that I care about your feedback about my music but others will ask themselves why you exclude me (as one of the most active users in that thread) so obviously from that otherwise painstakingly accurate list 🤡
