The hell that is file transfer... Can anyone help?
I'm trying to transfer my sample library to my new computer, it's 70ish GB and I'm about to defenestrate myself. Is there any conceivable way of transferring that number and size of files over usb?
- iTunes is shit
- Imazing won't let me browse the files app
- I can't make a zip and transfer it over WiFi with docs transfer as it's so huge it crashes whilst compressing
Am I relegated to buying a usbc flash drive and doing it that way?

Not USB but through a cloud, WeTransfer ($12 for 1 month) lets you send 200gb. Maybe the're other cheaper alternatives.
Up to 3gb is free with Wetransfer if you don’t want to spend any money… just needs 23ish transfers 😊
Thanks guys, I have icloud and the google one... I could use those I guess... My internet is crappy though, I was hoping for something a bit more old school
Forget the cloud if you don't have exceptional upload performance with your internet connection.
Have you tried a conventional USB drive first?
USB-C sticks have become more common too.
Windows, sadly
This is probably the best way. I think I will jump to the Chinese phone shop this afternoon and get a thumb drive I was hoping there was some cabled magic program, but seems not...
One option is to set up a SMB share on the computer, connect to the share with Files.app and transfer the files.
Then repeat the procedure on the new device.
I store most of my samples on a NAS and have it mounted in Files.app most of the time.
Maybe LAN drop ? Works in your own network, is cross platform and does not require any cloud storage:

I'll research this, thank you!!!
I've had no issues shuffling around +10GB in one go (lots of small files and folders) to/from my Synology NAS (or my Intel MacMini) over SMB. 11" M1 iPadPro with currently running iPadOS17.5.1.
In most cases I'd still recommend an external SSD for larger file-transfers.
@Samu Agreed, this should be the most straightforward solution.
+1 for FileBrowser as @tja recommended. I have FileBrowser Pro and it was a very good investment for saving my nerves after switching from Windows with Total Commander to iPad.
Sadly my version of Windows 10 stopped supporting SMB share due to security issues. Looks like 11 works well enough though.
What do you mean by “iMazing won’t let me browse the file app”?
It stops when making a backup of the iPad saying there's not enough free space despite there being 500 GB of free space on my laptop
Have you contacted iMazing support?
Nah I just tried the free version to see if it was possible. I thought it was a bit of a sketchy program, but that's a good idea
Sketchy in what way?
On Mac, at least, iMazing is an amazing program. It lets you retrieve individual files from a backup rather than fully restore a device. It lets you download/archive your purchased apps which is nice if an app you use ever disappears from the store.
no real reason, maybe just cos apple and windows have a weird relationship. I just thought that these kind of apps were a grey area. I stand corrected
Thanks @tja for mention Filebrowser Pro as an alternative to core app Files…
I bought FBP for 15 bucks today, and, it’s a fantastic app, but, it always a but, very sad to discover that you can’t browse iCloud Drive and On My iPad into FileBrowser Pros user interface…?
Is this some restriction from Apple that makes iCloud & iPad browsing impossible?
Perhaps I should write to the developer for some Q&A…
Or, can you browse iCloud?
Choose App Folder then Select Location. That will bring up the standard files browser and you'll be able to navigate to iCloud.
Ha!
Thanks guys for that!!
Perhaps you and @wim should express: RTFM!
This is the best utility app I’ve bought for a long time - thanks again…
I have a workflow for file transfer between iPads an PC (Windows and Macs) by USB cable:
1 - install DuckDuckGo browser on iPad
2 - After install, in Files app a DuckDuckGo folder will apear, with a Download folder inside
3 - Move, with Files app, the folders/files you wanto to transfer to computer to the Download folder inside the DuckDuckGo folder in Files app.
4 - On the computer, install 3uTools (Win, Mac) and connect the iPad via USB cable on the PC
5 - Open 3uTools on the PC, browse the Apps page, finf the DuckDuckGo app inside 3uTools and right click the app icon and select "View". A file browser with the "Downloads" folder will apear. Double click the downloads folder.
6 - In this folder the files you put with Files app will apear. Right click on the folders/files yiu want to transfer to PC and select "Export". Select a folder on PC to receive the files. Is also possible to copy files to the ipad with the "import" option in 3uTools.
7 - After trasfer the files to PC, on the iPad move again the files to its original locations outside DuckDuckGo folder.
Thanks
This works and is free!! Thank you!!! xxx
