  • There's a setting to turn the note names on. From what I can tell, it uses rows in pairs with the major key on top, followed by the relative minor. Then it adds keys following the circle of fifths, still using the pairings of maj and relative minor.

The notes in the rows start with the three notes of the major chord, but then I'm lost on the reasoning behind the sequence of the remaining notes.

I got that Russ. The first four rows are good, and then it's all over the place. Just seems like it would make sense to continue the rows in key sequence, or at least give the option.

  • Maybe I didn't explain it well. From the topmost row, every other row (all odd rows...if they were numbered) follow the circle of fifths for major keys. All the even numbered rows follow the circle of fifths for minor keys.

  • The reason I would like to edit which notes are in the rows is there is too big a range for the type of apps I want to trigger. Ifretless guitar and sax etc. Going from C3 to D6 in 4 triggers with apps like that seems too much. Don't know what it's like for synths, but I'd like to at least lower the range.

  • That would be great. I'm thinking that would be nice for custom chords too.

  • The rows work well for me. Dont know exactly 'why' but whatever minor key I choose I can get all the rows I need for that key on one screen. I'm sure it's been cleverly designed like this. It means it's easy to follow a set chord progression within your choosen key eg F minor or whatever.

Then it looked to me the individual notes are the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th from the chord, but at a mixture of octaves. So there is an element of variety when moving around the row- but you're always playing within the 7th chord. It sounds pretty good to me - although might get quite samey after a while I guess. It's been good for me for noodling little melody phrases over a chord progression I've already decided on.

  • It looks like the IV and VI notes are left out. I'd like to replace some of the higher octave I notes with those to get a bit more chord options.

  • Just rethought my last....it's easy enough to get to the IV and VI from neighboring rows.

  • Yep. Does it have the II? I thought it was the

    I
    III
    V
    VII

Personally I like the high notes for variety, but could lose that bass I note since I'm normally noodling melodies and have the bass covered.

Guess it depends how you're using it. Configurablity would be very useful.

  • It's I, iii, V ii, I, vii I, iii, I. The high notes are good for inversions.

    Cool. Thanks.

The thing I like about this app is it's so simple and immediate. Just pick up and play. The live quantisation also makes all the difference (for me who has no timing).

I was using this the other day to jam Animoog's Gamelan2 patch from the Metallic collection on a 4 chord progression (with some drums playing in another app). Just sounded so good to me.

The only thing is resetting the clock/tempo start in Fingertip Midi so it's in time with another app. Happy to do this by ear (not midi sync) but whereas before this was possible by switching quantisation on and off (switching it on would restart on the first beat) - now even that seems different in the update. Seems the clock starts when you launch the app and just runs. That's a bit of a pain, especially since switching apps kills the metronome so you can't even start you drum app to match Fingertip Midi.

  • I do like the instant gratification element as well. I'm not doing much that requires midi sync though, but I could imagine that would get annoying.

  • Thank you all for the feedback. You are correct in the setup of the notes, as far as the order of the notes goes. Thats from a year of testing and trial and error to the best combinations. Attest for now, next big update you will be able to change it to your own preference.

One of the major development features we are currently considering and testing is custom notes selection, touch sensitive velocity, and midi export. Thanks for helping with this.

We will be setting up a BETA group for the next update. If you are interested in trying it 1st, please email us. [email protected]

Also. Fingertip MIDI iPhone update has just been approved. Update and check out all the new features. for iPhone

    More to come soon...

    Cheer,

  • Fingertip is not appearing for selection in AB. (8.1, Air etc.) Am just posting in case I'm doing something obviously wrong....any ideas? Anyone else getting it to appear in AB (or IAA for that matter, no dice either)?

Sense I am making a typically colossal mistake etc. :)

  • I just grabbed it as it's free at the moment. Doesn't show in AB here either.

  • edited November 2014

@thinds If I set it up with, say, Thumbjam and then set up AB with Thumbjam in the input I can record (at least into Audioshare, haven't tried anything else), albeit with a hit record in Audioshare and then a double click out and then back in to Fingertip to play. That works, but it's, well, after a fashion :) Thanks for taking a look.

  • Just checked the AB listings and the FT MIDI apps are not there, so I guess they're MIDI controllers that run outside of AB. Like many others (Lemur, B-Step, Changeling etc.)

  • Thanks for looking. I allowed myself to be misled by some enthusiastic touting of their AB-ness I saw on youtube. Let's hope they are planning to make that right....

  • The instrument and the voice/vocals Fingertip apps, runs in Audiobus. The midi controllers does not. Not a big dellyo IMO. But sure, faster app switching with the AB sidebar is always a plus.

  • Thanks Mister G.

  • What are the major differences between the ipad and iphone version?

  • Anyone else having trouble getting Fingertip Midi to talk to Thumbjam?

It's working for me. Have you checked the MIDI settings in Fingertip Maestro to ensure that ThumbJam is set to On?

  • edited November 2014

@RJB. There's very little difference between the iPad version and the iPhone version as far as I know.

In fact I just looked and I can't see any difference in functionality.

  • @telecharge I only get network session when I'm working with Thumbjam, I don't actually get a Thumbjam option to select. Tried Thumbjam with Chordion and it works fine so I don't think it's a midi setting in Thumbjam.

  • @RJB I had network turned off in both, as I was using both apps on the same device.

  • @telecharge so you actually get a Thumbjam option to select in the midi panel of fingertip midi?

  • Yes, shows up below network.
