Favorite melodic sequencers?
I have so many apps that can sequence external gear, but I'm curious as to what other people are digging. I'm trying to not buy more hardware. Bonus points for sequencers that play well with MIDI controllers. Extra bonus points if you can point me in the direction of something similar to the Torso T-1 before I consider buying one.
Some ones are:
Drambo
Neon
Atom
LK
Nodes

I've got quite a collection of apps that can sequence external gear, but I'm curious to hear what others are into. Trying to resist the urge to add more hardware to the setup. Any recommendations for sequencers that work smoothly with MIDI controllers? And if anyone knows of something similar to the Torso T-1, I'd love to hear about it before I make any purchases. Currently, I'm looking into Drambo, Neon, Atom, LK, and Nodes. Appreciate any insights!
A few years ago I would have recommended the Arturia iSpark with its excellent hardware controller (I still have mine) but it's a closed environment, no AUv3 support etc. It does have Ableton LINK though and it's still available on the Appstore.
It can send and receive MIDI clock though so it integrates well with MIDI hardware.
Others:
Groove Rider GR16 (great hardware-like sequencer and outstanding MIDI Clock stability plus Novation Launchpad Pro MK3 support)
NanoStudio 2 (has LINK and one of the last updates gave us proper MIDI Clock out as well!)
Xynthesizr
Fugue Machine
iSequence (rather unique sequencing concept)
Korg Gadget
Drambo is great if you want to build your own sequencer under MIDI control, including LED feedback e.g. on a Launchpad.
@Gravitas is our master here in this regard
Oooo there is nothing quite like the T1 but the closest fun I've had is using AUM and mapping Cong Burns Strokes (sooo many parameters to choose to map!) to several controllers - you can if you want ignore all of Strokes audio side (you shouldn't but you can ) and then firing Strokes midi output into external gear via various AUM arpeggiators. It's wilder than a T1 but it isn't a T1.
Why is it similar to a T1 you me you ask! Mmmm after I used a T1 (before it had individual note entry) I loved the idea of 'dialling in' pulses and then constraining the pitches/quantising, adding random elements but baked in randomness - all of this exists in Strokes and AUM makes midi mapping a breeze - there are no procedural arpeggiators but that can happen in AUM, note pitch can be influenced by external midi but mainly by using the internally generated weighting waveforms which in turn can all be modified by external controllers. You can do everything apart from actually input your own melody much like the origin T1. It does feel a lot more like modern modular rather than band practice.
Phew that felt like GAS therapy just talking about it
So I do not repeat what has been stated by others, I would add Quantum Midi Sequencer
Love it so much. Analog sequencing style. AUv3 alternative would be MidiDreams (which I don't have but is on the same vibe)
Other mentions: Rozeta, Xequence, Aphelian, Polyphase, Cykle, StepPolyArp
You should also have a look into the freshly released Prism.
It gives you a lot for melodic sequencing.
Thanks DblU! I didn't want to toot my own horn but I designed Prism in a lot of ways to be what I wish the digitone sequencer could have been. So there's a lot of emphasis on melodic stuff. Also, my future plans are to incorporate euclidian and t1 style sequence generation into Prism. Can't say when, but it's on the board.
Thank you @rs2000 🙏🏾
If you want flexible sequencing for external hardware then dRambo is the one.
Step sequencers using pads or sliders or a combination of both is entirely possible.
For instance I've designed a preset for the Korg NTS-1
that basically sequences every available parameter via midi
with a random preset generator and arpeggiator built in.
So I sequence the oscillators as well which is quite fun to hear and see.
This is one of my videos where I sequenced the LED's on the Launchpad X.
and this one is when I basically turned a
Behringer X-Touch into a DFamesque percussion synth.
I use sqsl apps much less than I would if they were AUv3, but if sequencing external gear that doesn't matter. So take a look at Lottery, and maybe Temp or Latch. Lottery is the best I think. https://www.seqsual.com/lottery
Love the UIs and there is quite a lot of thought gone into these despite the minimalist appearance.
I did detailed walkthroughs on Lottery and Latch on my YT channel btw
Cykle
@Gavinski I wonder in which countries Lottery is available at all...
Being an old modular nerd, Mididreams is almost always the sequencer I load first. It’s familiar. Other than that, Nodes is quickly becoming my controller for larger setups (always in AUM).
Oh damn, yeah, I forgot those apps are not available in the EU any more. Also not available in China. He's really killing his sales with those decisions, his choice I guess, but really a bummer
The main idea behind the Torso is to get sequences going with as few interactions between you as the operator and the device as possible.
Drambo has generative and euclidean modules, but it can't generate sequencer steps and doesn't support polymeters.
Neon can't generate sequences, it only has algorithms that can run over the ones you dial in manually in a random fashion. Haven't used LK, Atom and Nodes but I doubt that they could replace a Torso. Finding a midi controller with such a tight integration is also impossible.
I'd get the Torso which is a brilliant device. It's not for me because I use the ipad mostly in handheld or lap mode when I create but I have to admit that I'm impressed by it.
@kirmesteggno
"Drambo has generative and euclidean modules, but it can't generate sequencer steps and doesn't support polymeters."
It can generate sequencer steps using the right combination of modules
and polymeter support is visible on the horizon as we type.
Also, to not repeat anything already mentioned…
What about ZOA?
Ooda?
EU is 25% of all sales in my case. Not "nothing" but if it helps avoid the red tape / additional cost of distributing in the EU, fair play!
I know that it can generate sequences, but I meant visible steps/squares in the sequencer so that you edit them after they're generated. The equivalent of pads lighting up in the spots where the Torso distributes the notes to.
Great to hear that polymeters are coming.
I knew you'd be scouting round for an opportunity to whinge about the EU, you never miss a trick Alex 😂 👍
T1 for Drambo would be amazing!
I have nothing to add as a lot of good apps have already been mentioned, but there are some listed I don't have that I'll definitely be checking out.
So many good options! Thanks, y’all!
I haven’t heard of the T1 until now however pads lighting up? No problem.
I did that when I designed a step sequencer for the LaunchPad X using dRambo
awhile back now (there’s a video floating around someplace).
The T1 looks rather cool.
Sorry I know. I'm a complete idiot for the most part, but for THIS I'm the WORLD EXPERT 😁
This was the T1 video which impressed me. Something with similar mechanics could be a nice plugin as well. I'd probably get the hardware too if there was a plugin as drop in replacement.
Props for pushing Drambo that hard btw.
How does an eight track dRambo version sound to you?
It's called the "d1-dRambo Euclidean sequencer" at the moment.
It has a Euclidean sequencer, Chord player, Arpeggiator,
16 x step sequencer(with 4 state saves and random generator), pitch LFO and velocity LFO.
It can also be used together with a LaunchControl XL mkii for those who like their instruments tactile.
Prism Sequencer . Newly released . Way cool . Super fun . Deeeeep .

Want to send a midi note and have random stuff happen ChaosArp

You can use AudioModerns Riffer the same way in some regard. Just set it to randomize every pass.
PixelMusic is a good addition to Zoa and Ooda that @Edward_Alexander mentioned
