My hardware synth quest may have ended

Synths I've owned:

  • Minibrute
  • Behringer D
  • Too many soft synths to name all, but Phase Plant and Softube Prophet 5 and Juno emulation bear special mention
  • MPC softs synths bear special mention, Jura especially
  • Many iOS synths
  • Microfreak
  • Mother 32
  • Behringer Deepmind 12

The quest could be over with the Sequential OB-6.

I really don't want to sound snooty, but the OB-6 is another class beyond all of these other synths in sound quality. The sweet spot is everywhere, unless you knowingly get ugly with the X mod. The range of tones is great IMO. You can do fantastic mono via unison. The Sync sounds are killer and demand attention.

And, of course, the poly sounds are super tasty. Get your Rush and Prince fix anytime. I keep the OB-6 in vintage mode all the time, but you can do very tight modern VCO tones if you want.

I have not owned or played other Sequential gear. I strongly suspect I would be writing basically the same post if I had happened upon a used Prophet 5 or 6 at my favorite used gear store.

My guitar quest ended years ago with a Music Man 25th anniversary guitar (close to an Axis.) So, yeah, this quest can end.

Not saying I won't get another synth, but I doubt it will be to get something better. Just different. The Oberheim characteristic tone is unique.

Anyway, just wanted to share this. Many times - most times likely - soft synths are more than good enough. But this synth hardware can't be replaced.

Thanks,
Joe

  • Congratulations!
The great thing is the wow factor won't wear off, the OB-6 just keeps on giving, it's a beautiful synth. Enjoy!!!

  • Congrats man - it’s a satisfying feeling when you find a piece of hardware that makes you say “finally - I don’t need to keep looking “

  • Congratulations on acquiring a monster synth!

  • Congrats on your most excellent pick! :)

OB-6 is also at the very top of my short list of best sounding modern analog; Hopefully my next and last in line to complete my trio of poly subtractives, following Hydra for clinical digital and Virus TI2 for monster VA.

Today’s VSTs are incredible, but not as immediately gratifying or performative as a well designed HW synth..

  • Absolutely
Software is arguably “more versatile “ or even a freer way to achieve sounds these days but I still would go hardware ; it’s just satisfying in a different way as you said,

@joegrant413 (and others if anyone wants ofc, lol), what was your favorite drum machine out of that nice collection?

  • I'm using the Akai MPC for most rhythms. I also have a Behringer RD-9, 909 clone, which I enjoy, but honestly I don't use it much.

  • OB 6 is a monster synth.

You’ll be surprised at how NOT clinical the Hydra can sound, it can also warmer than you would expect which is a good thing imo.

Will there be a Behringer Version of OB-6? 😁

💯 I forget Hydra is digital most of the time and most of my collection is analog.

  • You’re hardware infatuation has made me load up and re-evaluate the OB-Xd app.

I am just starting to chew into my Ti2 - had a really good morning with it - finding some cool sounds on it and recording knob twidling into Cubasis❤️ The track i want to use it on is in Logic so i hope what i found out translates there.
Have a lot of fun with the OB😃

  • This is how i feel about my iridium! :)

I owned hydrasynth desktop for a while, it was a great synth…i had to narrow my choices to get stuff done…so it left with a deepmind12, roland fantom ex, microfreak, and peak. I kept iridium, minifreak, osmose, and typhon. Haha. Its more choices than i want still…but those are hard to part with.

  • Nice.

Iv set my ipad up as ipad headphone out ( for all my ios synths )

So the opposite of the best synths.

but guess its not all about, just the output anyway.
