Digistix 2 crashes when importing samples, other issues.
Got Digistix 2 after a few months of watching tutorials and debating options. I'm trying to do realistic acoustic drums, think EZ/Superior Drummer, and Digistix 2 is the only viable option for multilayer samples with velocity/round-robin functions. Current issues aside it's a really awesome program that is exactly what I needed and is affordable, too.
I keep having crashing and other weird problems when trying to load samples onto pads, immediately after loading a sample the app will crash, this is happens every 3-4 samples in standalone mode. At first I thought this was because the samples were too large (some were a few MB each) but it occurs with much smaller samples too, like 100-300kb. All of these are short drum hits, 24b/48k WAVs that work fine in Koala and other samplers. Mostly mono, some stereo, happens with both and in standalone mode or when used as an auv3 in AUM or Loopy Pro. All of these are drumkits I've created and saved in the user program.
I'm running an iPad Mini 6 with tons of spare storage on a powered hub w/SSL2+, microKONTROL2, Launchpad X, and Nektar Aruba. iOS and all apps updated. Once samples are loaded it runs great, haven't had any issues editing samples or it crashing while playing.
Other issues:
When used as an auv3 in Loopy Pro or AUM it has far less of a chance of crashing vs standalone but it won't show multisamples after importing. Let's say I'm importing 4 snare samples w/different velocity hits on a pad, after I import the first and click 'Sample 2' and import the second (or 3rd/4th/5th) if I click back to the other samples I imported on that pad they will all, or all but one, show as empty. If I close and reload they will usually be back on the pad in the order I imported them. A sound still plays when I hit the pad.
Most of this is via using the 'Import' button as the only app that seems to allow folder split view (for drag and drop) is Loopy Pro. I mostly use PC/Android so is there some trick to get split screen in standalone mode or AUM? The three dots at top aren't present on those apps.
The last issue I had was when I wanted to move a layered kick drum from Bank A to Bank B. After moving (long pad press -> Move) it was still triggering to the notes that correspond to it's old spot on Bank A and when I added new samples to those spots in Bank A both would trigger. The sample I moved would not trigger from the assigned midi notes for the pad it was moved to in Bank B.
• Is there a way to move/swap pads (without keeping its old midi note assignment) or can I only use 'Assign' to put it on a new pad and delete the old pad?
• How can I see the name of the samples I've loaded? I've tried everything in the 'Edit' popup, tried the very bottom screen that also shows the sample waveforms. If I'm building a drum kit it's a ton of samples and I'd like to make sure I didn't load the same sample twice.
I've tried a bunch of troubleshooting, googling, searching these forums, and haven't found many answers. I can't find a manual for Digistix 2 and the tutorials are all 2+ years old (though helpful). Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Btw, you you can show the Files browser in slider over mode for most apps that don't support split view.
Many, many thanks for this! All of my searches for solutions kept requiring the three dots up top for split screen, like I said I don't use Macs/iPhones and really only use this iPad for work (Procreate) and music so I'm still learning some of the gestures/multitouch features. Searching for Digistix 2 info has also been difficult because adding 'crash' would bring up many results mentioning the cymbal.
I just ran the app in standalone mode with my samples folder open and loaded a ton of samples with no crashes! All of my crashing has been when using the 'Import' button under the 16 pads, I never used the (swipe-left on pad) method of importing samples because I didn't want to move all my samples to Digistix's folders and couldn't find a way to change the root folder for it.
Still wondering how to find the name of the sample I've imported, I watched the import/export video again and didn't catch anything.
Regarding names of imported samples: A pad will always show the name of the last imported sample. I think there is no way of seeing the other file names once imported.
And yes, Slide Over mode works best. I use it all the time with Digistix2, works with the Files app, Sample Crate or FileBrowser.
Drag & drop works great but I would love to see a feature implemented where you could import/drag&drop e.g. 5 samples at once on a pad. It‘s quite time consuming to import each sample one by one and having to choose a free layer/slot each time before importing.
I often build bigger kits with 16 pads, filled with 5 samples each. That‘s a lot of dragging and dropping.
Other than that it‘s a fantastic app with great features, my favorite drum app by far.
The multi layer / round robin feature sets it apart from other pad-style sampler apps.
Yes its a great app. What i want to know is can you delete the samples stored in files app once you have saved your drum kit in Digistix2, thus freeing up some space?
Replace pad names on assign is maybe what you wanted?
Haven‘t tested that yet, but I‘m pretty sure that I made some kits using the Files app with files that were moved later on ( not deleted though ). And the kits in DS2 still work.
But I still do not fully seem to grasp the iOS file system so that could be a meaningless observation 😆
To add to what @Gravity said, yes, you can delete the original samples after you import them to Digisitix 2 and save it as a custom kit in the User bank. You must save the kit to save the samples with it. It is also recommended that you backup your kits using the backup drum kit option in DigiStix 2. I tested retrieving the original sample from the kit and that seems to work but after copying off an aiff file that I had imported I had to rename it with the aiff extension and it worked. DigiStix 2 does also support sample references which do not store the sample - the pad name will turn from black to blue text to indicate that.
Thanks for the info! 👍
