Cubasis 3 - Can you change the timeline measurements?
Just got it in the sale - mainly prompted by the Link availability. I like to work in chunks of 1, 4, 16 + 32 bars - once I get up to 50ish bars on the timeline I get a bit muddled. Is there any options to change it? I can’t see anything in the manual but surely there are options?
It’s not just for the composing which isn’t so bad - it’s for the arranging/ hacking bits out.
I can make my own ruler using an audio track but is there anything onboard?

I was meaning along the lines of instead of numbering each bar as 1,2,3 etc you can number each block of 4,16 or 32 etc. So instead (if using 16 eg) of being at 128 on the counter you would only be at 8.
Or better still making the timeline beat counter changeable - so you can pick a point on the timeline - and make it that you can change the bar counter to start from there - making it far easier to calculate what is going where in the next section - instead of trying to figure out where in the world bar two hundred and something is - you can just tap it and it starts at that point from one again. You could of course put it back to the very beginning when you want - to see how many many bars or how much time you have used.
Ah, I see. No, you can’t do that. It doesn’t sound like something that would be difficult to implement, though I never heard of anyone wanting that functionality before. The best thing to do is to go to the Steinberg forum and in the Cubasis section, put it forward as a feature request. If other users jump on the idea and say wow, that would be really useful - then you’re in with a chance.
Sorry, but I believe in the opposite - why should Steinberg put money to develop something we never heard of (as an user demand)?
Is it even a thing in Ableton Live Reaper Reason or Cubase?
What’s with the stifling? Nobody is saying that they ‘should’ invest in it. They would only want to do it if they thought It was a good idea and it was practicable to do it.
The world is full of a great many things that at one time were never heard of.
Can you not imagine the benefits?

The idea sounds very much like a classic song structure in tracker where you have a song position list and each song position has a pattern 4-16 bar assigned to it for quick navigation.
I get it and I've often thought about this for Xequence. I also think in sections of 8 or 16 bars, for example, rather than individual bars.
However I always thought it might be overkill and the workaround you suggested yourself (using dummy clips as a "marker track") might be good enough. Especially if you set the clip to "Loop", then you can adjust your entire "ruler track" with a single finger drag...
Yes - the finger dragging out would make it easier.
I would really like to tap on the timeline to reset that position temporarily to zero whilst I’m working in that area. The more I think about it, the more I think it’s a great idea 🤩

A common way that DAWs do this is to let you create markers and navigate between markers usually with a way to go to the next or previous marker and to set a marker as the auto-return point.
The 'Sections' in Garage Band work almost exactly like this...

I think you must have misread my comment. I’m saying if he proposes the idea in the forum and lots of people jump on it and give the idea the thumbs up - yes we’d like that….. I think you’re a bit quick with the bucket of cold water there.

Unfortunately not. Even that would be good though.

Thanks for that - but it’s not really what I was asking for. The numbers you have stay the same relative to the timeline. I can see there is less numbers, but the numbers that are there are in the same position either zoomed in or out.
Like in your second picture I would want the 5 to be a 2 and the 9 to be a 3 etc as an example. ie 1 = the first set of four 2 = the second set of four. Plus the option to make it the first, second, third etc set of 8 16 32 or 64.

I like the Ableton style better too. You can't change it in Cubasis afaik.

I think I would place a few dummy clips on a track as a reference instead.
