A Beautiful Girl in a Photograph - 2024 re-release

This is a song I originally recorded back in 2020, but I wanted to revisit it for several reasons: the original tempo was a bit too slow, and my vocals were not that great. I'm a much better singer now so I thought I could do the song justice with a new version.

Lyrics in the spolier:

A print on the wall
It's faded and small
Now I know what it means to me
Part of our history

It's part of me
It's part of you
It was back in a time that you both knew

strawberry blonde
with eyes of blue
as she turns to look at you
there’s a beautiful girl in a photograph
and her eyes shine as she’s starting to laugh
it’s a moment in time that will always be
back in 1983

the girl is long gone
but her memory lives on
I always knew what she meant to me
more than a memory

she’s part of me
she’s part of you
she’s a beautiful girl that we once knew

strawberry blonde
with eyes of blue
as she turns to look at you
it’s a moment in time that will always be
back in 1983

  • Great track. It gives me memories of 1983, well I wasn’t born yet but it still sounds like it! Good idea to re-release some of your music, it deserves it!

Thanks. In the original version it was 1970, I thought bringing it forward might make it more relatable. Maybe should have gone for 1993! 😂

  • The song is inspired by a photograph of my mother that my dad used to keep on his desk. The photo was probably taken in the early 70s:

  • Great performance @richardyot and a deeply personal tribute. I agree it has an early 80s vibe. Great to revisit and rerecord some older songs - I’m also doing so. Often I find the production is better, but it’s harder to recreate the emotion of the first attempt.

Thanks so much for listening and commenting. I haven't found it too problematic reconnecting with the feel of older songs, mainly because I can sing better now so it's easier to convey the emotion anyway. I learned to sing late on in life (I was in my forties), so my singing was pretty raw for the first few years. It's only just got to the point where I'm really confident with it.

Yeah, I’m probably just thinking about my own song about my mum, “Mother” which was on my recent album release and which you commented on. I originally recorded it in her last few weeks back in 2016, it was rough and ready, not polished at all. When I revisited it last year, I thought I could re-record it from scratch and improve it. I really couldn’t.

Sometimes rough and ready is better than polished, especially if it communicates an authentic emotion. It sounds like the first take was the best in this case.

  • That’s really well done, Richard. The improvements in your voice are palpable. A beautiful picture of your mom, too. Not fond of the abrupt end, but the rest is very evocative yet timely. You can be well pleased by your musical trajectory, IMHO.

Thanks for listening my friend :)

I've been singing for ten years, but the last year has been something of a breakthrough. I didn't think it would take this long, but I'm slowly getting there. Even my wife and kids now begrudgingly admit my singing is OK, so I must have made some progress 😆

  • Excellent song, beautiful photograph, and lovely sentiment mate. It all fits together so well. I'm also a sucker for those Post Rock vibes ever since introduced to the genre late last year for the "Audiobus Friends EP".

Hoping we can collab again in the future @richardyot . Something banger for my upcoming album. It's Electronic Music focused, but TripHop is definitely an option. Love that genre.

I can't do a collab at the moment because my hands are full with other commitments (finishing both my own album and one that has been in the works for some time with Jankun), so I wouldn't be able to do it justice right now - maybe in the future though ♥

Right on! When you and @JanKun put your heads together the musical magic happens. 🥰

  • Agree with Mike about the ending but it’s a lovely track. Obviously heart felt lyrics and as you say, A beautiful girl in a photograph 🙏

  • Lovely 80s style track, wish I could sing as well as you ! Lovely shift after first verse, and the lyrics hit the mark. Some nice spare instrumentation, uplifted by some luscious pad and saw synths. Great stuff
