@Gavinski regarding the keyboard size, all three available sizes should maintain the correct proportions for both black and white keys. This is how it looks with the standard size on my iPad Air (4th generation):

It looks like you are just Zoomed in. Double tap on the sides or disable Zoom and Scroll from the settings.

Looks beautiful and i'm very tempted to buy this Wurly app, btw.... is in the horizon to do some "Rhodes" app in the near future?

If you're hankering for a modelled Rhodes and don't want to pay Pianoteq prices VTines is well worth a look.

that's the one i'm using now and i love it :) but i'm always looking for good Rhodes/E.Piano sound :). At the moment VTines is my fav between sound, app size and price.

  • I watched the videos from @Gavinski and @thesoundtestroom on this and it sounds great, and has some great tweaking options.

Definitely going to buy this now.

  • OK I BOUGHT IT! Sounds beautiful <3

I have so many E-Pianos (PianoTeq 8 being my fav) but I have such respect for AudioThing Ltd apps
I grabbed this while it’s on sale. It’s a beautifully constructed physical model of the Wurlitzer keyboards.
I got lost for a good hour just tweaking the knobs and then putting it though a bunch of FX app with the AudioThings Springs, Motor, FilterJam and Lines top of the queue.

Definately worth getting for anyone that appreciates the Wurly sound which made its mark in Rock (think Supertramp) and Jazz/Fusion (it can sound like a really funky or super sweet Rhodes).

  • Anyone going to post their version of Mercy, Mercy, Mercy?

  • I spent the evening comparing Wurlitzers- Pianoteq (desktop), Korg Module, and Audiothing (desktop). Some thoughts as I play...

Korg Module sounds good right away, it's got a lot of bark, but the switching between velocity layers is very apparent. Are there only two layers? Anyway, it's simple and fun.

Pianoteq Wurly has a big three dimensional sound, it's immediately impressive. There are some decent Wurly sounds in here for sure. I want it to be less dynamic, it's generally too bright at high velocities. I need to make my own patches to be totally pleased with this Wurly. There are a lot of parameters to tweak in the Pianoteq desktop version, I'm sure I can arrive at exactly the sound I'm looking for.

The Audiothing Wurly is quiet, turn up the volume! Many of the presets are very beautiful. It isn't as "alive" sounding as Pianoteq, but some of the presets do have more of the characteristic Wurly sound. The mechanical noises integrate with the body of the note better in this Wurly than in the Pianoteq version. Very nice! I like the more experimental aspects of this app as well. Excellent.

I can't pick one, they're all three fun to play for different reasons. I love ep sounds.

Thank you! I'd love to, but I need to get one first 😊
The reason I got a Wurlitzer initially was because it was lighter and easier to handle on my own. Then I got another one! 😄 But yeah, if I ever get a Rhodes, it will most likely end up being emulated.

  • There was a time, when I was happy with a few dollars worth of Wurli pack in BeatHawk. 🤦‍♂️

Hahaha, this is the problem with refining your taste, isn't it? I also miss those more innocent times when I was very easily pleased with most iOS apps, they are long gone 😂

This does seem now to be the Wurly to beat on iOS, both in terms of sound and tweakability. It really is lovely. Can sound very pure and also nicely nasty.

Do it and I'll add some flute on top

OK, that does it - going to grab my iPad right now and buy it. I do like supporting devs who I respect, and have bought quite a few apps over time just for that reason, only to rarely - if ever - use them.

I’m definitely a big fan of old EPs, and appreciate this vs. Pianoteq in the same way that I know older EPs rarely ever sound the same. A friend had a suitcase Rhodes that I would play sometimes, and it sounded fantastic - he thought it was broken in some minor way, but the dirt it added to the low end just led to anyone playing it coming up with some great left hand riffs.

Never played a real Wurly, but the character from apps like this makes me not really care too much.

Y'all have sold me as well. I love Pianoteq, but honestly the mechanical sounds have always bothered me a bit, so I'm really looking forward to this. The Wurli is always my go-to sound when I'm just playing and jamming.

Thanks to everyone who's posted impressions and also to AudioThing ✌️

  • Great work as always, @audiothing. This sounds absolutely amazing

I can’t see a scenario where I would turn those up too loud, but some subtle use really makes this sound fantastic.

Agreed. I mainly just want to turn them down in Pianoteq and sadly you can't fully do that there. Even with the noise sliders all the way down, I still get quite a bit of mechanical noise on some presets at least and it often doesn't sound great in comparison with the lovely tone itself.

  • Thank you all, I'm glad you like Wurly!

A customer raised a question, and I'd like to get your input. Do you think the standalone version of Wurly should include a MIDI channel selector and MIDI learn functionality? I assumed that most users rely on their DAW/hosts for MIDI management and use the standalone version just for fun. Currently, we only offer a standalone version for iOS, partly because it would be strange to open the app on iOS and not be able to do anything with it. What are your thoughts on this?

  • I use standalone instrument versions often, I appreciate having that option (thank you!). I would like and use both MIDI channel selector and MIDI learn, but I might be an outlier. I most often use my iPad as an instrument which I send into a mixer then a laptop for recording.

So I vote yes on the MIDI stuff.

    Thanks for asking!

    Or ‘The Ghetto’

OK thank you for your feedback! It makes sense to have at least the MIDI channel selector (probably for all the other instruments as well). I'll think about the MIDI learn.

  • Is it just me or is this app extremely quiet!
I have to add so much gain to the channel to get any sound from this all

It is strangely quiet. There are other things you can tweak in the UI that will influence the volume a lot, stuff in the pickup section for example. But it really is surprisingly quiet on the default settings

  • Thought it was just me!

  • It is quiet. So are the electric pianos from Korg. I always thought it was an electric piano kinda trait. A little more volume would be nice. I always put an EQ app on the channel to boost the signal.

  • Its almost unusable in my mixes tbh, I’ve done some tweaks… boosted it but that causes distortion and then its bad news lol.
Ima email them and see if it’s something they are aware of and can look into fixing

I’ll try a few more settings in the app to see what it can do, but if that changed the sound a lot.. then they really should address it!

Turning up the level on your mixer channel or putting a clean gain plugin after it won’t cause distortion if you keeps its level at 0 db or below.

  • Stand still, so I can hop on.

  • Yes, it might be a bit too quiet, but depending on the settings, with a simple C major chord played at full velocity and max volume, you can reach about -4/-5dB peak on the channel.
Anyway, we are adding a global boost control in the next update, and some optimization among other things.
