The Korg Gadget LE Challenge...3 Years Later
So three years ago, I posted a challenge here in the ABF for folks to either download Korg Gadget LE or to work within Gadget LE's limitations to create a track. I'd like to give that another go. So, here are the limitations to work within...
Korg Gadget LE allows up to only three tracks. Three tracks may seem very limited, but limitations definitely inspire creativity a lot of the time.
Gadget LE's only available gadgets to use are Marseille, London, and Dublin. You can use multiple instances of one of the Gadgets, one of each, or mix and match so long as you don't exceed three tracks.
No cheating by using an external host to host Marseille, London, and/or Dublin AUv3 plugins. (I can't believe three years after the original challenge I'd be saying that since before this year, Gadget's gadgets were not available as AUv3, lol.)
If memory serves me proper, all of Gadget's IFX are available to use in Gadget LE. LE doesn't have the most recent effects added to Gadget 3, but if you use Gadget 3 for this challenge, the new effects are allowed.
Regarding project length this time, I'd say no shorter than 30 seconds and no longer than 10 minutes. You can make it any genre you want.
For "mastering", you can do one of two things...either use Gadget's internal limiter to get the levels to where you like them, or you can export the audio and master in an app of your choice with whatever plugins you wish. Mastering the audio is the only time an external app is allowed, whether Logic's AI Mastering Assistant, Cubasis' Master Strip, Grand Finale 2, Bark Filter, AUM, whatever.
The audio can be posted anywhere you wish to post it - SoundCloud, Youtube, Dropbox link, etc. Be sure when linking to the uploaded audio that you include at least one screenshot of your Gadget LE project. (The exception is if you make a video of the project playback.)
The reason I'm bringing this challenge back is that we'll be using yet another free app that has limitations to create music with. This way the challenge is accessible to everyone. If you already have full Gadget 3, then make sure to work within the limitations above. Otherwise if you don't have Gadget, you can download the free Gadget LE to follow along with this challenge.
Good luck and make some music!

I'll start us off.

I did everything on my iPhone. I mastered the track in Cubasis using Taip followed by Grand Finale 2, but everything was created and mixed down in Gadget. Cheers.
(Also I wish @Michael and @thesoundtestroom could fix the forum code so that "on.soundcloud.com" links appear as a mini player like when posting full-sized Soundcloud urls. Cheers.)
count me in, 1 full drum machine track and 2 synths is more than enough, i did some live jams with less :-)
Ok here is it, delivered as promised, little dub techno, live performed (cause i refuse to build entire track in Gadget sequencer lol)
@dendy sweet - that put a smile on my face - a very productive hour indeed.
@dendy A really well done live performance. Loving the vibe.
@steve99 Did you hear mine above?
I might have to do this semi-live. I don’t think there’s a way to non gadget specific effects on and off. Which is a pain in the hoop. I tried recording it and it defaults to on Grrr.
I’m very used to gadget so I should knock this one out quite quickly. I’m thinking something portishead like, but maybe something a bit darker like off 3 or something. Who knows? Probably end up a lullaby 🤣
I'm just accumulating challenges on my backlog
Although I did export a file for the blamsoft one
Monolit has been crashing a lot lately for me unfortunately
This one I know I can dive in :
@jwmmakerofmusic loving your track. Could easily be in Hotline Miami
Groovy one by @dendy
Edit: wow... 3 years ago already. This is my submission from the last challenge (no idea what genre that mess is)
When we started wondering which app to use, I was gonna suggest we do this one again
Or Triq Traq LE
I remember that track! It was one of many great standouts. Can't wait to see what you cook this time.
Yeah, three years already. That's pretty shocking, lol. 😂
And yeah, this was an easy choice to make regarding which app to use for our next challenge.
One more ... this Gadget thing is SOO MUCH inspirative .. completely forgot it ... even started to play with idea of purchaising those midi controllers from Korg which are optimised for Gadget for more convenient live jamming (classic GAS stroke)
I went for 2 Dublins and one London and had some fun.
Mastered through lo-fi-af - although on second listen, I seem to have forgotten baking it in…
@dendy The flow of your second track is so good! Ah, you should definitely consider one of Korg's controllers to use with Gadget, mate. Your tracks are fantastic!
@tyslothrop1 I do love a good TripHop tune, especially TripHop that leans towards the more electronic side of things, like The Crystal Method. This is so good!
@jwmmakerofmusic I second the hotline Miami vibes. Really cool! Thanks for the kind words, too. I know the Chrystal method only by name, have to give them a listen.
@dendy hot stuff! I admire your live skills.
I have now - transported me into Tron there for a moment Great stuff, got my Nanostudio at the ready.... 3 tracks you say...
Hehe, yes, but in Korg Gadget or Korg Gadget LE only.
Thanks mate. I love Tron and Tron: Legacy so much! Baller soundtracks, so that was an amazing compliment there.
@jwmmakerofmusic
@senhorlampada
@tyslothrop1
Listened to your stuff .. What a amazing examoles what creative people can do with such limited tools !!! Every single piece is inreresting in it’s own way 👍👍👍
Ok, when i should pick my personal winner then @tyslothrop1 your piece spoke most to
my taste 👍👍👍
@dendy wow, thanks so much, I'm flattered.
Ok finished. Semi live. Didn’t save my first one, so this is what it is. Very annoyed and frustrated at myself as this is only about 60% of what it should be. But life is demanding a lot of father related fathering on Father’s Day! So….
You have a new subscriber mate. I love it. ❤️
@jwmmakerofmusic cheers mate. Never recorded like that before. went a little off script at the end, the danger of playing live!
Or, as Bob Ross calls those - "happy accidents". Playing live is fun. Making "mistakes" is fun. Going off-script is fun. I was Classically trained, but once I was also trained in Jazz, I learned to embrace going off script. No such thing as perfection, just enjoyment.
I get off the script liteeally every single time when i play live 😂 .. that’s actually feature, not a bug .. i love the fact that the way how i performed track is unique timestamp in my wordline and it will NEVER repeat in same form again, i will never play this track exactly same…
Also, obviously, one of my best performances where those i did not record 😂 Lost like tears in rain…
@dendy @jwmmakerofmusic
yeah, what's that saying, if the wrong note sounds good, play it again?
I’m actually ok with embracing the mistakes. I grew up playing violin both orchestra and ceilidh music, my mums a classically trained soprano who only sang in church choirs. I was barred from said church at the age of 4 for singing nursery rhymes cos I thought their jams were boring!
It’s definitely all about enjoyment. I instinctively mess around when I play live.
@dendy Ha! Love the Bladerunner reference mate.
@squeals That's a fascinating story about your musical upbringing. Shame the church barred you, kind of extreme lol.
Dang!! All these jams are awesome!!
You guys all crushed it!
@jwmmakerofmusic the beauty and reason I enjoy these challenges is that it forces me to accept the limitations and imperfections. I used an iPad Air 2 until 2-3 years ago. Until it literally couldn’t do anything but what it already knew how to. I got really good at workarounds, bouncedowns, etc. there’s unbelievable creativity in not being able to ‘just do this…’ but then with ADHD I’ve never exactly been able to do just do this things 🤣
I’d always do things in weird ways. If you watch that video you will see both completely ridiculously convoluted ways of doing things, but also really simple short cuts…(like hitting stop!)
I’m really glad you did this. There’s a lot of people I’m learning from and lots of good music.
I’ve also learned that I can rip the sound from my screen recorded hitting stop technique and sample that 🤣
Double post
I'm glad I did this too mate. Also nice to meet someone who also has ADHD.
Haha, yes! Same.
Twice the fun. 😅
Very nice! I guess nobody would have noticed you getting off the course, if you hadn't mentioned it.
