What's the difference between this and PolyMkII?
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/vapolymkii/id6476809566
Even the sale description in both reference PolyQuad?
Yeah that’s what I’m wondering…
Yeah, I don’t need another redundant synth.
Shoot, I really don’t think I need another _non_redundant synth lol
Haha i do not need it and i do need it!
Bi-timbral?
Not multi timbral?
and timbral different to poly?
Can you use an app to split any poly synth to keyboard zones ?
Does a bi/multi timbral app mean you can load different patches to different sections of synth ?
It would really benefit this dev to make clearer the differences between this and his other offerings in the appstore description.
The way I saw bitimbral used was synth that have two (mostly equal) synth engines you can layer, like in Moog Mariana. Doesn't necessarily say anything about polyphony.
You could use drambo, put a note filter to separate different keyboard sections, put the synths you want after (repeat with different synths) and use a mixer afterwards to mix the synths.
At this point, given this is how other synths are presented, it just feels odd. At least the UX should be different between these and the other synths. Or just focus on one synth with all features.
Yes, keeping basically the same UI hardly really seems likely to entice people to keep buying these.
Thanks
Actually bought Mariana ( last synth )
Nice.
Id probably just build Drambo synths ( A VA and Wavetable ) anyway.
Looks pretty awesome though... 4 LFOs!
Definitely…as an owner of VAPoly and VAPolyMkII I can’t see anything different here that I need .
It would greatly help if the dev would allow to change the colors.
All I did here was quickly change the UI from positive to negative.
Yes, a bit more visual distinction between these apps might be in order. Takes more work, but it’s important.
Has anyone purchased this yet? I’m curious what people think
Ok now I’m confused.
VAPoly16
VAPoly
VAPoly Quad
VAPoly MK2
VAMono
VAMono MK2
What? Ok mono and poly i can see the difference… but whats all the poly synths??? Are they the same and why isn’t this one app??
I can appreciate the developer keeping their naming conventions (VAPoly and VAMono), but beyond this it's almost impossible for a casual App Store customer to understand what are the differences.
If the intro versions kept their current look and newer synths had more visual sophistication to them (even if that was limited to the ability to change colors and/or if they had nameplates), then there would be a sense that one is getting the latest and greatest version.
Here is my understanding of the main differences in features, I only own VAPoly16 but I have been following these apps as they came out trying to figure out what the deal is:
VAMono
Monophonic
Unspecified 24db/oct filter model
2 oscillator
Monotimbral
No patch bay
VAMonoMkII (actually a poly synth so this naming is weird, but the transistor ladder filter would typically be found in a mono synth so maybe that's why)
8 voice poly (appears to also be 8 voice when bitimbral based on description, but can't confirm)
Transistor Ladder and Sallen-Key filter models
2 oscillator
Bitimbral
Modular-style patch-bay
VAPoly
8 voice poly
Cascaded OTA filter model
2 oscillator
Monotimbral
No patch bay
VAPoly16
16 voice poly (or 8 voice bitimbral)
Sallen-Key filter model
2 oscillator
Bitimbral
No patch bay
VAPolyMkII
16 voice poly (or 8 voice bitimbral)
Sallen Key and Cascaded OTA filter models
2 oscillator
Bitimbral
Modular-style patch-bay
VAPolyQuad
8 voice poly
Sallen-Key and Cascaded OTA filter models
4 oscillator
Monotimbral
Modular-style patch-bay
So the new VAPolyQuad seems to trade off the bitimbral, 2x osc and 1x filter per layer found in Ryo's past couple releases for monotimbral 4x osc synth with 2x filters, which to me seems like a sidestep more than an upgrade (might even be a downgrade as there is no way to get 16 voice poly). Definitely agree with others here that the developer needs to do more to differentiate between synths, both in look and features.
I was very happy with VAPoly16 when I bought it (and it still sounds great), but seeing Ryo release a new synth every couple months with slightly upgraded features makes me wish these had been updates instead of completely separate purchases. That said, the frequent sale prices these all go on makes it a little more reasonable, BUT I still don't want to buy anything now because in two months there will probably be another new synth that adds features to make it slightly better than what is currently available.
EDIT: Ok so I was completely wrong about VAPoly16 being 16 voice poly (and I'm assuming this applies to VAPolyMkII as well), it is 8 voice poly with the option of having the two 8 voice layers stacked on top of each other or split at a certain point on the keyboard. You cannot change it to monotimbral and achieve typical 16 voice polyphony. The description for VAPoly16 and VAPolyMkII never actually specify 16 voice polyphony, rather they mention 16 voices, two 8 voice synthesizers, and 16 voice bitimbral polyphonic synthesizer, which technically isn't wrong but feels unclear if not misleading.
Dude appreciate the break down this makes it make more sense haha.
I wonder if the bitrimbal synth lets you “layer” or stack the 2 synth voices or if it only splits them along the keys.
I might pick that one up for 6$ it seems like a fun instrument.
I just got dagger and don’t really get along with it… sounds to same same to me. Or just to rough… so now i need something more relaxing and normal 🤣
You can definitely layer/stack the 2 synths (or split), I was mistaken because I thought you could turn off bitimbral mode and get 16 voice polyphony, but you can't really do that in a typical sense.
For $6 they are pretty great, VAPolyMkII and VAPolyQuad both have the OTA filter, which should give a more classic, "relaxing" polysynth sound (OTA filter used in the Roland Juno-60 and Jupiter-8). They also both have the Sallen-Key filter from the Korg MS-20 which isn't exactly normal (or relaxing) for a poly synth, but that's the very reason I picked up VAPoly16, it sounds a lot more aggressive than the usual. I also love Dagger for it's rough/aggressive sound
Thanks a lot. Wow, this thread is actually very thought provoking. Imagine if all the synths that came out, even from different devs, all used the same basic UI skin. There would be far fewer synth sales. Time to watch the classic 'Paradox of Choice' TED Talk again.
Maybe we should ask the master himself. I once contacted him and got a friendly response.
As far as I know, VAPolyMKII you can select part 1 and part 2 separately over the keyboard or layered, but not split like VAPoly16 - unless I’ve missed a button, as the interfaces are very button laden.
To be honest, I prefer the 4osc dual low pass / high pass filter pairs of VAPolyQuad.
I’ve bought them at the sale prices and don’t mind the overlaps at those prices, but there are occasional bugs and the multi layered interfaces have been quirky for me in some AU hosts.
I suppose while they can be difficult in differentiation, at least it’s not the expense of hardware model ranges like the thousand different DX models Yamaha released over the years lol. VA Synths - the Pokémon of iOS synth apps, without the colour!
