Bouncing Bonkers Call - granular experiment

edited June 19 in Other Music Content

In this short video, I am creating a joyous cacophony with a single speech sample. The sampler used is Novum granular synthesizer, a fantastic virtual instrument from Dawesome available for Mac and Windows.

Sample is from my audio samples Patreon Reward pack 30, The Second Slapstick Pack - part 2. Source video is a classic slapstick 1936 short movie that is now Public Domain. These packs are exclusively available to those who support me on Patreon.

For those who may be new to of granular sampler/synth, here's a brief description:
Contrary to a regular sampler that plays back samples linearly, from beginning to end or from end to beginning if playback is reversed, a granular sampler plays back samples in chunks, called grains. Size of grains can be adjusted and they are usually not played linearly. With longer grains, like in this example, sound is closer to the original.

The virtual playhead jumps from one grain to another. How it jumps is determined by the various controls a granular sampler/synthesizer has. This can be more or less randomly with more or less wide gaps.

The specific controls vary from one sampler to another. Additionally, many synth features are usually included, like filters, envelopes, LFOs and various modulators.

iOS granulars that come to mind: Tardigrain, Samplewiz 2, Borderlands, Grain Science (and there are more).

  • I think you can do similar ( The reslice ) sort of thing

With Drambo, arps, pitch, delays etc

I always think I like Silo and not really granulars

and recently made a cool preset where my own voice via mic sounded cool but it were more textural atmospheric.

So probably not really granular sounding.

Hi sigma79 and thanks for your post!

If you're referring to Sylo Synthesiser from Wooji Juice, it is based on granular synthesis. It's a cool sampler, one of the first I got on the iPad.

Sylo and other wooji juice apps are great (esp Mitosynth), but this https://apps.apple.com/us/app/silo-granulator-and-reverb/id6444164740 is prob what they’re referring to.

  • Cheers.

    Silo is the app.
