Desktop "Scaper" App
I was intrigued by this simple desktop app to make easy soundscapes for video by simply dropping an audio file onto it and presto, great video soundscape.
However, all the sample kinda sound nearly the same to me. Small differences, but essentially all the same soundscape sound.

Have I got this wrong, or do all the output samples sound pretty much the same regardless of the source audio?
I was also thinking that you could essentially get the similar results using something like Cascade, Alteza, Spacefields, or Blackhole.
Or, do you think this Scaper app is doing anything unique?

Sorry, this doesn't answer your question, but is absolutely worth experiencing...

You can get hugely varying results out of Virtual ANS very easily.
@skiphunt it seems that it can -- like many plug ins -- automate or do something fun in one interface. This one seems to to some sort of frequency separation and keeps the transients separate from the noise and harmonic sections of the random inserted audio file.
PaulxStretch
https://sonosaurus.com/paulxstretch/
can turn anything into the longest evolving drone scape imaginable. It wont keep the plinks bashes and bings of the more percussive things though. But its free.
You can indeed do very analogous things with a variety of plugins. FRMS is a great choice. Also Fluss, Cascade, and any of the inscrutable ios "Scaper" apps are suitable as well. The good thing about GlitchScaper and FieldScaper (and their cousin BeatCutter) is the semi preservation and even invention of percussive transients.
Yes! I have this one already. I have his original IAA one too.
I'm not trying to emulate the sound of Scaper per se... I'm only checking to see if it does something unique or interesting that I can't already do easily with the apps I already have.
Yes, I have all of those and love ALL of them Including paulstretch
It does sound like Scaper might be doing something slightly different, but to me the differences in output are always subtle... no matter the source. Yet, I vaguely think it might actually being doing something different.
@skiphunt have you looked at novum? the something you're mentioning might be the frequency separation which Novum does as well as granular synthesis and a healthy dose of FX...

googleTube to listen and compare and LMK
better go for https://anemond.net/sloom/
has more controll:)
Sloom video was pretty cool
audiblevideo: I betatested for it;)
its very cool:) diffrent flavours from Paulstretch.
Thanks for the alternate options. Both look cool.
I just played again with Paulstretch for awhile. I find that I can get very interesting results with it, but there are so many controls that it’s hit and miss for me. More experimental overall.
I’m sure if I took more time I could probably get better control of what I’m doing… but do you think apps like Sloom, Novum, and Scaper are easier and quicker to get good soundtrack material from? Or, will I likely still have to roll the dice with much experimentation to get there?
I know that’s a bit vague, but what is your opinion of these other options versus just learning to use Paulstretch more effectively?
I own Novum - it’s a really very flexible synth perfectly suitable for beds of evolving sound and leads for that matter. Is it better than the other two desktop apps… If I had to hazard a purchase for either one I’d probably go for Sloom. It seems to have more direct control and still give the desired loooooooog sonic texture.
As I might have mentioned before PaulXStretch will give you those long textures but without the transients or percussive bits. It gives you a lot of controls in stretching but really just that. At least how I’ve used it.
@skiphunt have you got forester by leafcutter John?

It’s awesome!
This would be lovely as an iPad app wouldn’t it?
@id_23 I just took a gander. Its lovely.
Coolness. Thanks for the link!
fun fact:)
my name is in Forester about box.
hover the mouse over the big logo.
( I'm Felix:)
I'm interested in maybe getting this, and also in a few of the other apps mentioned in this thread. Having looked at the few YT videos available on this particular app it looks quite flexible, although I agree there's a tendency for everything to come out the same. This also true of very different apps such as Igor's FieldScaper - once you go too radical, you're really hearing the preset algorithm rather than the source material.
I think this app (Scaper) is basically a granular synth with three independent playheads (channels). If you chuck in anything with existing melody or chords it's going to produce a dischordant creepy wash of sound that's maybe cool in itself but not much use musically, no matter what you do to the separate channels. On the other hand, if you use a sample with a pure(r) tone, you can tune the channels to intervals and produce chords. What you gain is the texture that emerges from the various Scaper parameters. How useful is this actually going to be in practice? Who knows. You can do similar things in other apps like Borderlands, but the details will be different because you have control over a different set of things.
I like the look of Novum. It's a little bit (!) expensive for a casual purchase, but there's a 90-day trial...
@MarkH Novum and other Tracktion apps go one sale several times a year - up to 40ish percent off.
Now you’re talking . Been watching all the Novum YT videos…
July 4th 40% sale at tracktion starting err... now (site-wide)
Great, thanks!
