Is this already electronica or still acoustic?
How do you see it, is it already electronic music or does it count as acoustic? As I understand it, it is recorded on handpans. But then the sound is changed a lot and sounds like drone, ambient etc. to me. So what counts more, the final sound or the way the basic sound is produced?
Reminds me of discussions at the time when instruments like the clavinet emerged. There, for example, metal reeds are plucked, then fed to the electronics via a pickup (usually a simple coil around the reed) and then processed as desired. Basically, the same way it is done with any electric guitar. But despite the distortion and modulation effects, it is not automatically described as electronic music. Or should we be more flexible with the categories?

For once, I think there’s an easy answer (he says putting on his tin hat and awaiting incoming missiles…). This is electro-acoustic music. And no, I’m not being snarky, it’s a common term for combining acoustic instruments and electronics.
And this sounds marvellous, I’ll have to set aside some time later to listen to the whole thing.
That’s pretty much what I was going to say. No need to have such a hard dividing line in place when talking about music - there’s always way to much gray area for that to make much sense.
Yep, my vote goes for electro-acoustic as well. Hand drums through effects is a great combo
It would depend entirely on the context in which I’m choosing to characterize it. And most likely, when talking about gray areas, I’m not going to make a choice and not worry about fitting it into a single category.
Wow... really awesome. Gotta save it to my playlist here.
Took a few days to finally listen, but it was worth it.
And would also call it electro-acoustic
On a different side of the spectrum, I really liked when I listened to Days of the New, that used heavy riffs with unplugged guitar. Different approaches are nice
