Remove background noise (plane or train cabin) from voice (talking/announcements) in real time?
I recently enjoyed making some beats while travelling, and that brought up the following question/idea:
I want a dedicated audio route in my plugin host (AUM, Drambo, LoopyPro), that acts as a pass thru, filter and amplifier for the built in microphone so I can hear cabin crew announcements or a neighbour wanting to talk to me.
The routing is no problem, but is there a plugin other than various noise gates, that can eliminate the engine noise in real-time so as not to spoil the beat making, and make the announcements clearly understandable. Otherwise the voice quality doesn’t need to be HiFi. A step further would be to reduce the music volume for the duration of the announcement (sidechaining ?). Maybe another case for Drambo experimentation…

Brusfri from Klevgrand seems to be the best option

I am not sure if it performs well as a real-time processor. All the example scenarios described on the plugin’s app store page relate to recorded audio.
It works real time, I nearly always have to use it on my mic chain for voiceovers to take out background noise. You can turn lookahead off it that sounds better to you. Yeah, Brusfri is excellent. Manage your expectations - it won't reduce all background noise entirely, but it is very very useful!
Though it it's just that you want to hear when someone is talking to you, you won't have to worry about the quality of the audio too much, in which case you'll be able to crank it very hard and it should reduce a lot of background noise. Mind you, I feel that in most cases, if wearing headphones on a plane, if someone needs to talk to me they'll just tap my arm or wave at me or whatever.
@Gavinski and @gsm909 thanks for the suggestion. I bit the bullet and bought Brusfri. Wow! This is exactly what I was looking for - and easy to use as well.
Fantastic!
If anyone is curious or interested in expanding this with more hardware capabilities , you can check out the TULA MIC, it has Brusfri in the firmware and it’s a great mic
Nice looking little bit of kit!
Nice kit indeed.
Yes, works great - even when alone in the studio and when I want to hear the postie ringing, or the cat having something to say.
Disabling lookahead doesn’t make a huge difference for me but saves a few % DSP and reduces latency. And LoopyPro can do sidechaining via follow actions - all sorted!
