Drambo stereo widener?
Heyo!
Wider - by infected mushroom, is a free stereo widener (adding extra width) that i tend to use a least a bit in all my stuff.
I haven't wrapped my head around how to achieve this effect in Drambo. Any ideas? Phaser? Some M/S thing?
I'm out of my depth (phaser pun intended) 😉
Comments
Drambo can host Wider. 😉 That's how you achieve that effect in Drambo.
I'm only being a smart ass of course. Now to be serious. Are you looking how to make the effect in Drambo? Have you tried PatchStorage?
Here’s a straightforward stereo widener.
using dRambo only modules.

Haha, BRILLIANT!
Every now and then i go Drambo-only just to learn a little more and reaffirm my foolishness using anything but Loopy pro and Drambo. Also i host Drambo a lot in Loopy for drums and fx. Just realized Wider was one i never figured out.
THANK YOU. M/S is still some strange magic i never spent a lot of time with. Now i will. 💕
Ah cool. Best of luck to you mate.
Here’s one very basic way do it, but this isn’t “mono safe”, and can have phasing issues. I’m sure there are better solutions.
Worth it to spend some time with the mixer/signal modules. Stereo to and from L/R and mono. Also the stereo width module.
You’re welcome.
M/S is how apps such as Widener achieve
stereo imaging.
Yes, simple algorithms like that give rise to phasing issues. Separately delaying M and S may be mono safe, but rest assured you can still get TONS of phasing, now in L and R instead of the mono mix. And phasing is just one of the problem areas.
That said, just as some bad effects (e.g. aliasing) may be intentionally used artistically, you can look at this from a mixing engineer's or a creative perspective, leading to different sets of criteria for quality. But to avoid surprises when using phasing intentionally, one must be aware of the effect on the mix and have the tools and means to verify these phenomena. This may require a deeper understanding and investing time in each and every project.
To get a glimpse of where a rudimentary, basic phasing-free widening begins, take a look at the impulse response from Wider Touch.
And then there's a more elaborate stereo widener AUv3 which cannot even be approximated with impulse responses since it's not a linear time-invariant system - but will spare you the shameless plug
Then again, these plugins' real magic is how they can turn mono into stereo. For further widening actual stereo sounds, sometimes they can be unnecessary and inappropriate, nevertheless this thread was started mentioning these.
It's possible i won't use this module configuration for this effect, BUT, it gave me an excuse to try a Stereo to L/R split and recombine thing which i haven't done in Drambo before so thank you.
The are still so many modules I've never touched. It's so interesting to see then in action.
