"Should I Upgrade My 2017 iPad Pro? Opinions on Recent Models"
Hello! It's time to change my iPad. I currently have an iPad Pro 10.5”, which I believe is the second generation released in 2017. It has worked (and still works) perfectly, but the battery has been lasting less and less for a year now, and it's time to upgrade to a more recent model.
I suppose that if a 2017 model works well for my needs, a current model, even if it's a basic iPad, will be more powerful than such an old iPad Pro, right?
The use I give it is as follows:
- AUM where I load Nembrini amplifiers and guitar effects and AudioShare for backing tracks
- Koala Sampler
- Lumafusion
- Procreate
- Cubasis
- Besides the usual, YouTube, Netflix, etc.
So the question is... Would a current basic iPad be better than what I have? Or is a 2017 Pro still more powerful?

iPad 10 outperforms 10.5” iPad Pro on every count
Only downsides is iPad 10 has usb c port so any lightning accessory will need dongles
I used the Apple battery replacement screen on my 2017 10.5" iPad Pro due to battery issues mostly (and dodgy charging port and a couple of other things) and I couldn't be happier with the outcome. The replacement unit works like a charm and feels like a new unit in every respect, even though some parts are recycled.
So that's an option if you have limited funds.
Also, not part of your OP but they offered me a replacement Apple Pencil which also had a completely dead battery for the cost of just the battery, so brand new Pencil for a quarter of the original cost, 7 years on. Not too shabby!
What is 'battery replacement screen'? Yeah, if happy with their current device, OP might be better off simply replacing the battery.

The iPad 9 is roughly twice as fast as the iPad Pro 10.5 (2017) in single core, and roughly three times faster in multicore. iPad 10 is even a little bit faster still.
Hmmm. The geekbench score on the latest base model is much much higher and it now apparently has 4GB or ram (like the 10.5 Pro) which was what seemed to be the only thing still be keeping the 10.5 around as a contender. If you dont care about losing the headphone jack then given that the base model has USBC (which is awesome for external drive support), seems like an improvement across the board now to me.

I’m guessing you’d have the most improvement with Lumafusion. I have the same iPad Pro and nearing 1k tracks with Cubasis. It never lets me down, but may be a bit slow on mixdowns.
I had a 2017 10.5 pro and my battery had lots a lot of its life. Then I bought a brand newM2 pro and the battery is just as bad as my 10.5 was. Those M chip are mighty power hungry. Disapointed but it is so much more powerful.
My aging ipad pro 10.5 lives on an old focusrite itrack dock. the dock keeps the ipad charged and gives me some inputs for a microphone, a guitar and a midi keyboard. i hook it up to small speakers and have a nice time.
maybe after you upgrade, you could consider sending your old ipad to a similar type of “retirement home”.
Thanks everyone for the responses. It's a relief for both me and my wallet to know that a basic iPad will perform better than my old iPad Pro. Now, the eternal dilemma: a new iPad will probably be released in September. Is it worth waiting 3/4 months? I don't think it will come with an M processor or major innovations, but since I'm at it, I might as well get the latest model.
As for giving my old iPad Pro a secondary use, I have that figured out. I still have an iPad Air 2 that I use occasionally. It might even be worth replacing the Pro's battery and using it to watch series, YouTube, etc., so I don't wear out the new iPad I'll buy. But these are just musings.
By the way, do iPads with the M chip consume battery that quickly?

However I recommend getting an m1 air for $400 or so

Definitely upgrade. I just got an 11 inch iPad Pro M4 after really struggling with my 2017 iPad Pro 10.5 inch for the past couple of years, and it laughs at everything I throw at it. Incredible machine.
I have the 2017 pro 12.9 and it’s still kicking as a looper and guitar rig at church. Though about upgrading eventually but need to pay off my mpc keys 61 first.
I haven’t really thought about the lack of headphone jack on the newer iPads. I usually don’t use mine anyway. If I am making music on my iPad it is usually hooked up to my ica4+ or to my pedal board. I have only plugged physical headphones into a hand full of times this year. Not sure I would miss it.
